Jolly good shrew
Good job by the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival with "The Taming of the Shrew."
It's a lively production, directed by John Woodson. Daniel Murray and Monica Bell deliver high-energy performances as Petruchio and Kate, and it's great to see Lucius Houghton back on stage here.
Graham Smith steals plenty of scenes as Gremio, a lecherous, doddering old suitor to young Bianca. Think comic Strom Thurmond.
Laughter rolled through the audience throughout the show. This one's a hit for NCSF.
How well does Shakespeare's story hold up in the 21st century? I said to my wife as we were leaving High Point Theatre, there's a lesson to be learned from Petruchio's "taming" of the headstrong Kate. It's that times really have changed.
