The flags on 9/11
The News & Record is flying its U.S. and North Carolina flags at half staff today.
The flags atop the Lincoln Financial building are flying at normal height.
What are others doing? What's appropriate?
In what other significant ways are individuals and institutions marking the day?

I believe Ed Cone's article on today's opinion page speaks for many of us on this day. It is poignant, loving and so very human. We have changed; and we remember. But, we go on living, laughing and loving. Brenda Bowers

I agree that was a powerful column, presenting the personal anguish and the larger meaning.

According to US code, there are specific guidlines about when to fly the flag at half staff. (See paragraph "M".)

Thanks, Roch. The White House has issued this statement (in part):
"NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2006, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half staff on Patriot Day. I also call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and remembrance services, to display the flag at half staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent Americans and people from around the world who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001."

County govt. got the message. I was over at McDonald Plaza for the 1 p.m. observance, and flags were at the appropriate level.
