Outreach to Africa
Cheers for students at Bennett College, who are joining with counterparts at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill to participate in the Millennium Village Project.
They plan to adopt a village in Kenya, Lanita Withers reports today.
I'm not familiar with this program (here's its mission statement), but it sounds like a great way to put money to work at the point where it's needed -- avoiding the government corruption pervasive in so many African countries -- and to give American college students an idea of how Third World people struggle to get through each day.
I hope the Bennett students will be able to visit their village to see for themselves and to provide hands-on help, and that they'll consider a longer commitment through the Peace Corps or some other agency after graduation.
