Black, Gold, Orange, Bowls in Florida is nothing new for WFU, Clemson Hill Tigers, Auburn Plains Tigers, Wofford Terriers?????
1 st Gator Bowl ....January 1, 1946 Wake Forest 26 South Carolina 14
1 st Cigar Bowl. Early 50's...Wofford 7, Auburn 6
*Note Auburn QB that day was Coach Vince Dooly, age 17 later of Georgia University Bulldogs fame. Wofford had a host of WW2 Combat Sports Vets who were recurited by their Field commanders and a promise of jobs if they went to Wofford on the GI bill. The average age of the Wofford team was 27 with two congressional medal winners. Coach Dooly was reported to have said that the bowl was the most ruthless game ever play in football for him.
Clemson was one of the first teams invited to the Orange Bowl in the late 40's when the Clemson Alumi promise to purchase in advance 5 thousand tickets with cash, which got the Orange Bowl off to it's National start.
