Hurry with those exams, boys, and get back on the court

Just the other day, I was admiring Tom Campbell's essay, "Are Universities to Educate or Entertain Us?" It dealt with the overemphasis on college sports.

Tonight I'm wishing there was a Tar Heel basketball game to watch. My favorite team hasn't played all week -- just because the guys are taking exams. Come on, are they students or athletes?

Man, I hate being a hypocrite.

Than stop wishing for a professional college game to smooth your inner want to be gladitor fears and become a real supporter of educational efforts.

Bring back Club College football and support the non professional-college grants jocks as the true lovers of the Sport. In the old days this was known as the JV team.

Note! Club College football was a rage that came back in the late 70's in this state, believe it or not. NC, Duke, State, and a host of smaller minority schools in the system fielded teams for a couple of years with amazing results in a leaque of it's own.

The downfall of the Club Football was when the Division 1 Universities rule that college freshmen could play the full 4 years instead of waiting out their freshmen year.

Your timing is off, Connie. Freshman eligibility was restored in the early '70s.

More notes on Club College football and it's success!

The last year of the leaque was when a small vocational college located in Lumberton or Robinson county decided to go big time in the leaque. The College president appointed a former NFL player to coach the team and find young deprive kids a way to get a degree and bring fame to Robinson County. The coach simply went to the Sheriff of the county and ask for the records of former and present inmates at the county jail.

After some serious chats with the inmates about their educational future. A team was fielded and enrollment soar at the college with new students with a promise of degree if they play for the school. The team nickname was the " Raging Indians"

After a impressive season by beating every other club team in the leaque such as Duke, North Carolina, Fayetteville State Teachers, Florida State, with the local Lumberton newspaper large front page headlines being

" Indians Tommyhawk Duke"
" Indians Club Tar Heels"
" Indians to Play for Big 4 title against State"

A large massive crowd of educational concern tribal fans and supportors from Robinson County arrived at Carter Stadium for the Championship game against NC State. Some say about 30 thousand, depending on the media reports at that time since the local sports media was confuse as to whether this game was the traditonal State, UNC game.

The "Raging Indians" jumped to a big lead at halftime by the hair raising score of 40 to zip against the State Club team.

It was than that higher ups at State had decided that the this must not happen to the image of State by getting clobber at halftime by a bunch of vocational school has beens.

When the second half started, the entired State varsity team appear on the field dress and ready for action. After a vicious second half, the raging indians had done the impossible by beating both State teams at the same time. Conflicting media reports after the Championship game said that riots occure or raids by the indians fans on the State team during the final minutes.

The President of Robinson County vocational college was later found guilty by a federal jury about accepting federal title 8 educational funds for students who were not enrolled in the school.

To this day, NC State officals go into shock when the term "Raging Indians" is use when hiring former Flordia State coaches or suggesting that a college coach from Boston just might have educational connections to Robinson County.

This had to be the motivation for "The Longest Yard". What a story.

And we have to wait until January before the best football team in the state plays again!

Unfortunately, I think they'll be the only team from NC to be playing in January...

What you don't know, there was a National Championship Game that year in Club College Football. Briefly it was the infamous Club team from Charlotte. " The Charlotte School of Law and Hairdressers Art College" The school was designed around the educational concept that students could attend at night and work during the day. Some of the famous Grads were " Little Richard" of Rock and Roll fame and of course his main talent in Hair design. He also play offensive tackle, but mainly as a reserve lineman since he had a major issue by holding the defensive players in the wrong places.

The Charlotte School got the right to play in the National championship game by default, when the whole team " Raging Indians" of Roberson county fame were arrested for probation issues by the Sheriff after the game with State, along with the President of the College by Federal agents.

Charlotte play the San Jose College of Designer Dressers at Duke Stadium under the title of the "WW2 Rose Bowl East." The game ended in a tie after 26 overtime playoffs, when they ran out of footballs from the field goal kicking of the foreign inports soccer players on both teams. Very little media PR was generated by the sports press about the game and in fact nothing was reported by them and the outcome. A paying crowd of about 12 students from both schools attended the game and the players had to pay also to meet the costs of the Rose Bowl national championship game. The game was televise to a Duke Frat House by cable and was watch by some male students. It was from that game that the Duke students got the idea from the " Raging Indians" replacement team that they founded the infamous Duke Raging LeCrosse Team for the future.

Note! Your note about the "Longest Yard" is well taken. I was a bit actor or a coach in the film, since I was the leaque commissioner for a semi pro team that was use in the film [The Augusta Eagles] The owner of the Eagles was the guy who was quoted in film " I think they broke his F###%$%$ neck" when he play the part of the team trainer as he rush on to field to treat the hurt player. He was later convicted by writing too many pain pills to the community of Augusta a few years later and ended up as a inmate in the same prison where the movie was shot. He did become the prison team Trainer and continue his career in healing.

For the record, I was not a inmate in the system at that time, when the movie was shot and that is another story for some sports and political judical enemy fans to think about.

The Tar Heels get back to work Saturday, hosting High Point University.

HPU President Nido Qubein today predicted a win for the Panthers -- sort of. Hosting a community prayer breakfast, he said the Heels are going to need a lot of prayers.

For once, Nido's powers of positive thinking may be overmatched.

It appears that the spiritual President Doctor has an inside tip from the Bookies in Vegas on the High point spread. Is it possible that we are looking at a Pete Rose want to be or a new Buddha in the educational sports business?
