Y-Yop, American hero

Wow. I really admire Y-Yop Enuol for standing up to neighborhood thugs.

Some might consider the 13-year-old Montagnard boy a "snitch." That sort of attitude attempts to put him on a lower moral plane than the junior gangsters he pointed out. What a fallacy. Y-Yop's courage and integrity should be examples to all of us. The only way to stop wrongdoing is to oppose it with everything you've got, even at personal risk.

Too many dangerous punks in this community seem to run loose without anyone checking them until it's too late. For evidence of that, see my previous post. Thanks to Y-Yop, maybe some other kids-going-wrong can be turned around in time.

In my book, Y-Yop is an American hero.

Doug,

Thanks for this post.

I had missed the article in the newspaper.

You also made an October 5th post ("Hero, not snitch") about this same topic.

It's not easy to do what Y-Yop Enuol did, and like you, I admire him and regard him as a true American hero.

You wrote, "Thanks to Y-Yop, maybe some other kids-going-wrong can be turned around in time."

I assume you were referring to the students he "snitched" on.

What does it take to turn kids-going-wrong around?

On the whole, I don't think our society has figured out an answer to that question.

I'm not sure what the answer is.

I do know that encouraging students not to snitch on others who are engaged in destructive, dangerous, harmful behaviors and activities is NOT the answer.

Snitching is NOT the problem.

The kind of people out there who promote anti-snitching as a positive philosophy ARE part of the problem.

To regard snitching as worse than the behaviors that inspire the snitching is comparable to Jesse Helms putting down Martin Luther King's civil rights activism while ignoring why his creative efforts were necessary in the first place.

Sincerely,

Hardy

Like when Bill Clinton, his entire administration, and the mainstream media crucified Linda Tripp for "snitching" on the president's sexually predatory conduct?

Hardy, thanks for your thoughts.

jaycee, I can't say I've thought of Linda Tripp lately.

I'd like to also congratulate Y-Yop for his good deed and his work in Scouting.

The Boy Scouts of America is a wonderful way for boys to learn morals, leadership, and the fine attitude that Y-Yop displayed. I worry that some boys drop out of Scouting as they enter the teen years. This is the years that they could benefit the most. Some of our country's greatest leaders and innovators were former Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts in particular.

I salute this fine young man. Way to go Y-Yop.

Thanks, Scout Mom. Scouting seems to me to be an especially helpful activity for immigrant youngsters. What a great way to learn about our country and culture.
