John Edwards is wrong about the media

Presidential candidate and former hedge fund consultant John Edwards today called on Democrats "to openly oppose and take the necessary steps to stop the merger between News Corp and the Dow Jones Company/The Wall Street Journal."

Basically, Edwards is offended by media mogul Rupert Murdoch's imminent purchase of the Wall Street Journal.

Murdoch's News Corp also owns Fox News, one leg of Edwards' axis of evil along with Wal-Mart and Smithfield Foods. The latter two resist unionization, and Edwards is working very hard to win union endorsements and money. The former, says Edwards, is mean to Democrats.

"The basis of a strong democracy begins and ends with a strong, unbiased and fair media -- all qualities which are pretty hard to subscribe to Fox News and News Corp," Edwards pronounced.

That statement indicates some confusion, or perhaps manipulation, on Edwards' part. Anytime one associates a strong democracy with the media, I assume he's referring to the First Amendment, by which the Founding Fathers implied that a strong democracy depends on a free press. But a free press is in no way the same as an unbiased and fair press. There was really no such thing as an unbiased press at the time the Bill of Rights was ratified. In fact, many publications existed primarily for the purpose of promoting particular political views.

The idea of an unbiased and fair media actually contradicts the concept of a free press. Simply put, if the media are free, then they're free to be biased and unfair. If they're supposed to be unbiased and fair, there's a presumption that someone is going to make them. But who's going to judge how unbiased and fair they are -- President Edwards? Will he be fair in his judgments, or would the media just have to conform to his biases?

Of course, President Edwards couldn't actually override the First Amendment and force the media to be nice to Democrats, but I suppose he could use his bully pulpit to rail against the unfairness of Fox News. Or, worse, maybe he could direct the FCC to oppose mergers of media companies whose views he doesn't like -- as he's apparently proposing now.

"The reality is that Americans deserve more news outlets -- not fewer," Edwards says. "It's time for all Democrats, including those running for president, to stand up and speak out against this merger and other forms of media consolidation."

But, guess what? Americans are getting more news outlets all the time. There's an unbelievable proliferation of media in a society when everyone with a computer can be a news source. If Edwards doesn't like the idea of Murdoch owning the WSJ, Edwards can start up a competing newspaper. But where does he get off trying to deny Murdoch the right to buy it?

There's less need than ever for the government to police the media, and it's frankly disturbing that a liberal presidential candidate who's as media- and Internet-savvy as Edwards is promoting media suppression, apparently based on ideology.

Or is there a little more to his indignation? Oh, yes. Editor & Publisher reports that Murdoch and some News Corp executives seem to be supporting Hillary Clinton. And I thought they were unfriendly to Democrats. Maybe just some Democrats.

Oh come on Doug! Old Orwellian Murdock simply believes that Hillary is more equal than John Boy.

Ted Turner once said that Old Fox Murdock was only loyal to Corporate Globalism and not Americans. Whoever thought that Pillar of American Capitalism [WSJ] would be own and control by a foreigner like Hillary.

Bang on the mark, Doug! I happen to be as distressed as Edwards is about media mergers that create gigantic entities offering the vast bulk of "infotainment" out there (Isn't Gannet one of those?), but I agree the principle of free press allows for bias, and historically encouraged it.

Conservatives and Fox News types generally do better in ratings because they go after red meat for the average joe. Liberal media at least attempts more reasoned analysis, I find. But that doesn't sell.

If only there were such a thing as a passionate moderate outlet.

You are in luck! It's call the Animal Channel or Animal Planet. You get excellent passionate views from all of your new found friends and most likely be lick or eaten.

Thanks, Jim. I watch very little TV news, and often get annoyed when I do. What I hate most - and I find CNN's Paula Zahn often guilty of this - is when the interviewer begins with an obvious premise, elicits responses from her subject that completely refute her premise, then makes concluding remarks that simply restate her original premise as if the interview never actually occurred.

Biases are inherent in the media, as they are everywhere else.

I don't get it. Is he trying to use an anti-trust platform to oppose the merger or just the fact that he doesn't like it?

I guess without bias in the media, you'd be out a job though, huh?

He's trying to win the Democratic presidential nomination. A while back, he led a Dem candidates' boycott of a debate that was to be broadcast by Fox. He's painting Fox and Murdoch as enemies of Democrats and trying to make himself the champion taking them on. And now he's trying to link Hillary to Murdoch. So transparent.

It only seems that way if you're looking through liberal-tinted glasses in the first place. The rest of us recognize it for the slanted, biased coverage it is.

A lot of people are like that. I am sometimes. Opinions we agree with are well-reasoned; those we don't are ignorant rants.

Good for you! Confession is good for the soul.

Bad for you! You just call anybody who disagrees with you a fool. Truely a sign of a up and coming Tyrant in the mainstream media business.

Connie, you can say the same about me. DOn't be shy.

Excellent post, Doug. Perhaps we should note, as a matter of considerable interest, that Mr. Edwards and those of his flock rarely complained vociferously about the rest of the television media prior to the emergence of FoxNews. What does that say about what the news had been like on CBS, NBC, ABC,CNN and PBS?

Doug said:

Thanks, Joe.

There's not any news source that someone doesn't think is biased. Edwards knows that. He's just trying to score political points.

Connie, you can say the same about me. DOn't be shy.* Doug

You are confuse! I was writing about Hillary and Edwards who wanted to shut down the second tier of Presidental Democrats candiates from the debates. You do remember John whispering into Hillary ear about their support of free speech with democratic values, while the sly TV cams were recording the whole secret chat between them.

Yes, while Edwards loses ground to HIllary and Obama, he has to fend off the little guys on his heels. He's been trying to take over Kucinich's following on the far left, but he'd probably better worry about Richardson, who's got much stronger credentials and potentially broader appeal once you get past looks and media savvy.

Well if John Boy thinks little Dennis followers [All 4 of them and that includes Dennis wife] will surge toward him. No doubt he hired the dude that thought up the Bush surge in Iraq in this amazing political power play.

but he'd probably better worry about Richardson, who's got much stronger credentials and potentially broader appeal once you get past looks and media savvy.* Doug

You might be right about Richardson looks, last year he won the uglyest Gov contest at the southern border of his state hands down by the Mexican Government. For some strange reason, the Mexican Government still thinks they own New Mexico and it's crooked pols.

Oh no! Just in! Edwards has admitted to recieving over a 1000 dollars from Murock employees at Foxx. He says he going to give it back if Hillary gives back the 20 thousand that she got from the same Foxx employees.

Oh no again! Edwards says he recieve a million dollar up-front bonus for his book from last year about growing up poor in South Carolina from Rupert News Corp Book Publishing Company and some chump change for 300 hundred thousand dollars in advance travel expenses and haircuts to promote it

He says he going to donate the money to his favor charity [The Hair Crossdressers of American]to prove his concern for the poor hairdressers.

For a poor boy, he certainly does keep rich enemies supporting him.

Doug! You are batting 333% which is a great average in Baseball, but if you are trusting Glen Beck and Fox as your true and trusted source for news. You would be shipped down to the minor leaques of politics and be a 4 tier draft neo-con supporter.

By the way! The Edwards campaign is releasing a new tube video to counter-act the Murock political rumors and down right dirty political tricks by Hillary husband " Slick"

The titles will be " Home Alone 1" where he is hugging a Xmas tree in a homeless shelter in downtown Chicago. and the other blockbuster political video is " Home Alone 2" where he is hugging a Planation owner in Orange County, North Carolina after his wife found him at Wendy's.

Yes! Fox news is not fair or balance. It is simply the weapon of choice for the new police state that is in your life.

More Good news for the Edwards camp. Its seems that Hillary said yesterday at the big time Democrat bloggers conference that all lobbyists were really taking care of the little people and were their voice in government and nice people. It appears that she is aware of North Carolina own outstanding lobbyist Don Beason.

True! Except when Doug does his constitutional homework and gets it right sometimes. I'm not ready to write him off as a tool of the communist party yet!
