God and country and a growing campus at HPU

Another week, another dedication of something new at High Point University.

This evening it was Phillips Hall, the home of the Earl N. Phillips School of Business.

How classy is this $24 million building, designed by High Point architect Greg Mercer and constructed by High Point firm R.K. Stewart & Sons? There are two fireplaces in the richly furnished front foyer.

The Phillips School was named in 1973 for Earl N. Phillips, a High Point businessman and one-time mayor. Phillips Hall, the school's first home of its own, comes in part from a lead gift by Earl N. "Phil" Phillips Jr. and his children.

It's part of what will amount to 800,000 square feet of new building and $200 million in new investment on campus, HPU President Nido Qubein said.

Results? The freshman class has doubled in two years. The incoming MBA class has doubled since last year.

Qubein is riding high, and flying the flag. American flags are raised all over campus. High Point University, founded by the Methodist Church, is all about God and country.

About the flag, "While I'm president, nobody will burn it or tear it," Qubein said.

The business school philosophy? "It's about free enterprise, it's about capitalism, and we ought to teach it proudly."

No shortage of pride in Phillips Hall, or anywhere else on campus.

Good for him! What is he going to do when 70% of the American people start flying it upside down as the sign of distress in this country. Send in the Sheriff of the Asheville county and bust a few heads like they did to that couple in Asheville last month.

Maybe President Quebein should change the name of the University to the "new and amazing neo-con republican university of the South."

GOP gubernatorial debate

You could call it High Noon in High Point.

The three Republican gubernatorial candidates -- Salisbury lawyer Bill Graham, former Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr and state Sen. Fred Smith -- will debate one another at High Point University on Oct. 20.

The debate will be moderated by John Hood, president of the John Locke Foundation. It will start at 2 p.m. at the university's Hayworth Fine Arts Center.

The event will be free and open to the public.

We don't smoke marijuana at HP University
We don't take no trips on LSD
We don't burn our draft cards down on Montlieu Street
We like livin' right and being free.

We don't make no party out of lovin'
We like holding hands and pitchin' woo
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy
Like hippies out in San Francisco do

And I'm proud to be an Okie from HPU
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at Phillips Hall
And white lightening's still the biggest thrill of all.

Nido's Boots are still the biggest thing in footwear.
Watch out or you'll find Nido's up your a--
Football's hopefully coming to the campus
And the folks here still respect the college dean.

And I'm proud to be an Okie from HPU
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory all over campus
And Bob Jones soon won't have anything on us at all.

Good for HPU!
Nice to see an institution that still has values and hasn't caved into the neo-liberal trash so prevalent in colleges today.

I'm with jaycee. You only have to look at the Duke faculty's response to the lacrosse rape hoax case to see the danger of a counterculture bent on campus.

No doubt about that, but do you really believe these minority rule fruitcakes run Duke?

And Bob Jones soon won't have anything on us at all.

You got that right! BJU help give us George Bush in 2000.

Not sure why High Point University and Nido Qubein are getting knocked by some here.

No one is forced to attend High Point University. It is a private school, not a public institution. They have that right to promote whatever values they want - if people don't agree, they don't have to attend.

I think it's sad and troubling that promoting "God and country" is considered quaint or outdated. Those values have served America pretty well, if you asked me.

Exactly.

HPU isn't a Bob Jones University by any stretch of the imagination. It does value its religious heritage. Nothing wrong with that.

Qubein -- an immigrant from the Middle East --also promotes American values. He certainly exudes a spirit of energy and optimism that at one time was associated with Americanism. It seems to be a successful formula at HPU.

That is easy! HPU is not getting knock here. It's the President who has taken a page out of the Karl Rove playbook manual by wrapping himself in the Republican flag defense.

Correct! It's call choice and a free market. So why do some here who disagee with public institutions that engaged in Diversity programs have a problem when a private institution is challege on some of it's so-called conservative values?

I think it's sad and troubling that promoting "God and country" is considered quaint or outdated. Those values have served America pretty well, if you asked me.*just saying

It's not outdated! It has simply been stolen by some conservatives who consider it theirs and won't share it with others until they agree with them 100%.

True! Are you aware that BJU private security police are armed with AK-47's at their security gates upon entering the campus. One would assume that the Muslin hord is at their gates in South Carolina.

True! Like most immigrants who first enter the United States from the old days of the Republic. The term "God, Family and Country' was invented in the middle 50's by the conservatives during the cold war era. It gave us the Joe McCarthy's who supress anybody who disagree with him and his blind patriotism and followers. Sorted like the present dayt neo-con republican leadership.
