One Guilford

Guilford College is hosting the next One Guilford program, sponsored by the News & Record, on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

We've lined up a strong group of people to lead the program, including Paul Gibson, Stanley Battle, Don Kirkman, Andy Brod, Amos Quick and Julianne Malveaux.

The event runs from 9 a.m. until noon in Dana Auditorium on the Guilford College campus. The program is free and open to the public.

ONE GUILFORD

Wednesday, October 17, 9 a.m. until noon, at Dana Auditorium on the campus of Guilford College

Purpose: To bring together community leaders and motivated citizens for discussions of key issues pointing to a bright future for a strong, unified Guilford County.

Program:

At 8:15, informal gathering, coffee and refreshments at Dana Auditorium.

At 9, a welcome by Dr. Kent Chabotar, President of Guilford College.

At 9:15, introductions by Allen Johnson, Editorial Page Editor of the News & Record.

At 9:20, an overview of Guilford County government's Strategic Alliance by Paul Gibson, chairman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.

From 9:30 until 10:15, presentations of four visions for Guilford County:

• "Aerotropolis" -- creating a global economy based on aviation, manufacturing, transportation and logistics around Piedmont Triad International Airport, by Donald A. Kirkman, President and CEO, Piedmont Triad Partnership.
• Furniture Capital -- the economic impact of the High Point Market and potential for High Point's development as the intellectual and creative center of the worldwide furniture industry, by Dr. Andrew C. Brod, Director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at UNC-Greensboro.
• Millennium Campus -- What collaborative efforts between N.C. A&T State University and UNC-Greensboro mean for the future of Guilford County, by Dr. Stanley F. Battle, Chancellor, N.C. A&T State University.
• Opportunity Preparedness -- What it will take to educate Guilford County's young people to meet challenges and reap rewards in the future One Guilford, by Amos Quick, Vice Chairman, Guilford County Board of Education.

From 10:15 until 11:15, breakout group discussions, one for each vision, led by facilitators and attended by presenters.

From 11:15 until noon, in general session, reports from facilitators followed by conclusions and outlook by Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President of Bennett College.

Is there registration online anywhere? (Egad, two days before ConvergeSouth!)

Sorry about the proximity to ConvergeSouth. This is during fall break at Guilford, so use of facilities and parking availability will be good there.

We're not requiring registration. Everyone just come.
