Yet another example of why police officers are needed in schools

At Olympic High School in Charlotte Wednesday, a 17-year-old student became "verbally and physically agressive" toward a teacher and was restrained by the SRO. He was carrying a loaded, concealed handgun.

Here's the Charlotte Observer report.

How would it feel to be that teacher?

How would it feel to be that teacher if there were no police officer nearby?

Good post. You might also want to add yesterday's report of the gun-toting 11 year-old at Wiley Middle School (see http://www.digtriad.com/news/local_state/article.aspx?storyid=89819&catid=57 ) to the list of reasons why SROs are needed.

Frightening times to be a teacher.

I mean, it's frightening enough even without the thought that some kids might be armed.

How would it feel to be Deena Hayes when a gun-toting kid kills a teacher or another student after you'd successfully driven the SRO's out of Guilford County schools?

As long as incidents like this demonstrate the need for SROs, the school board majority will not agree to remove them.

Interestingly enough, there are guards at the GCS board of education meetings.

And mind you, this is not an agenda item for tomorrow's GCS Board retreat. Personally, I don't think the SROs are going anywhere without a big fight.

Heck! Senator Kerry is a perfect example on how to handle rude students that screw up his speeches to other excited students. Simply rent out the University of Florida campus cops to the school boards in American with a 20 year supply of Tasers.

Doug,

If you or your sister acted up in school, or were disrespectble to any of your teachers, there would be some serious consequences at home.

Perhaps the parents (or parent) should be given a fine in cases of the actions of their children.

My mother was a "single" parent after my dad died when I was six years old, and my brother and I were taught NEVER to misbehave in school. She felt it would reflect on her and she had alot of self respect for herself and others.

You wouldn't let us take guns to school, I know that.
