Running hard: Northwest Guilford Tar Heels

The Atlantic Coast Conference cross-country championships take off in Charlottesville, Va., later this morning, and the University of North Carolina team will be full of Vikings from Northwest Guilford.

Four of the Heels' best runners are Northwest products:

Alex Ray

Zack Dawson

Ian Bracy

and Addie Bracy.

Generally, the competitive level of high school cross country in Guilford County isn't very good. Some schools don't even field a full team, maybe because the sport is seen as too strenuous.

Northwest Guilford is the most noteworthy exception. The Vikings have a consistently strong program, a testament to good coaching.

As a long-time-ago Carolina cross-country runner, I want to say: Go, Viking Heels!
