Stragglers

I was jogging on High Point's Greenway, which runs behind Welborn middle and Andrews high schools, late enough in the morning that classes would have started.

So why did I pass kids trudging s-l-o-w-l-y toward school or just hanging around laughing and smoking? Must have been about a dozen in three different groups.

Is this the norm around our schools?

Hey, principals. Send someone out there to round 'em up and haul 'em in.

Doug...that greeneway has always had problems with kids either skipping school or being late to class. It was a problem two years ago when I was at Andrews.

Nice to see things haven't changed much.

Principals would try to rouse them periodically, along with SROs from both Welborn & Andrews, but they can only do so much, unfortunately. Since Guilford County (or Guilford County Schools) doesn't have truant officers (wow...there's a novel concept), it is left up to school administrators to shuffle them into school and back into class.

Why should they bother? They won't be punished because it might hurt their "self esteem"
So they're pretty much free to do as they wish. If a teacher talks to them about it all they have to do is assault the teacher and then claim they're a "victim" of teacher abuse.

Plus, if the administration dared try to round up these kids, Deena Hayes and her buddies would promptly accuse the principal of racism. So like Jaycee says, the kids are pretty much free to act as they want. That's just how it works in GCS.

John Burns said:

Just asking, you are the only person to bring up race. I note Doug didn't even mention the kids' race.

For the record, Andrews students have been cutting class back there since the school was built, or at least since themid 80s.

.... not that I would have any first hand knowledge or anything.... ahem... heh heh.

You got me, Mr. Burns. Deena Hayes never, ever, has brought up race or claimed racism. Not even once. How could I ever get such a ridiculous idea?

You continue to amaze, Doug, jogging around town. Which leads one to conclude you are either
a) crazy b) not only a jogger but a sprinter who can sprint-and sprint very fast if needed. c.) waiting for someone to mess with you so you can do a Charles Bronson / Jodie Foster or d.) just took out a large life insurance policy and have concluded you would be worth more to your family after your Cumby's party or e); different permutations of the above.

In all honesty, Doug, you would probably find the same outside ANY school in the disctrict on any given day.

Doug said:

Savage, I don't consider jogging either dangerous or unusual.

I'm sure Andrews/Welborn aren't alone in this problem, nor is truancy a recent phenomenon.

But, with so much emphasis on keeping kids in school, I'd think there'd be a consistent effort to make sure kids get to school in the morning.

Skeet Club Savage said:

Doug, there's like guys over in New Guinea who don't think diving off tree tops with vines lashed to their feet who enjoy the rush when their brain squishes against the inside of their skull when they make that sudden stop, who don't think there is any thing dangerous or unusual about it either.

You can come clean, Doug. What are you packin'?

Doug said:

Maybe your neighborhood is rougher than mine, but I am not jogging through hostile territory.

jaycee said:

Doug, if you're jogging anywhere in High Point your potential for a hostile encounter is waaaay high.
I used to jog on the Andrews track a 1am and even at that late hour I always went armed.
I was not willing to bet my life that nothing would ever happen to me.
I hope your jaunts continue to the trouble free.

Doug said:

Thanks, jaycee. I wouldn't carry a weapon while jogging, but if you'd consider exercising at a more reasonable hour I'd invite you to run shotgun for me.

John Burns said:

I spent a few years of my high school career living in the neighborhood behind Andrews on Waverly Street.

I used to walk to school and cross that creek that runs behind the schools.

Never had a problem.

But 1am?!? Who the hell jogs at 1 am?

Doug said:

Usually a guy out running at 1 a.m. -- and apparently carrying a firearm -- is up to no good.

jaycee said:

Well, if you work 2nd shift from 3pm-11pm, you run when you get the chance. At the time I lived within walking distance of the Andrews track and took advantage of the opportunity. And there wasn't much competition for track use at that time of day...:)

Devil's Advocate said:

It's possible that the kids are seniors and don't have a 1st period class.

Interesting point. Why is the superintendent talking about extending the school day if there are students who have free periods during the current school day?

Savage, I don't consider jogging either dangerous or unusual.* Doug

I just Goolge the stats on jogging for last year Doug!

3. 13 joggers were eated by Mountain Lions
4. 6 joggers were eated by Bears
5. 2 joggers were gorged to death by a Moose
6. 4 joggers were tramble to death by Bison Herds
