Unsubstantiated attack on Edwards

I see a wide disconnect between John Edwards' political pronouncements and his personal practices, but this headliner by the National Enquirer looks like a ruthless, irresponsible attack.

The story appears to lack credible substantiation.

The Edwards campaign says it's false. The NE admits (near the bottom of the article) that it's been unable to get comment from the woman. So what's it got besides hearsay?

Well, there's timing -- a couple of weeks before the Iowa caucuses, where Edwards is closely contending with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

This is very shady. Is it a plant by another campaign, or just business as usual for a scandal sheet?

This has the usual Clinton Political Machine fingerprints all over it. The next thing we'll see is a revelation that Edwards actually had a secret desire to be President when he was in kindergarten and he sold drugs while he was in high school.

Except I don't see the Clintons as working with the NE. But something's going on.

Please check the bottom of the Enquirer post where you'll see that the story was originally reported more than two months ago (Oct. 10). It has also been widely commented on since then. Given this, it's hard to see how the timing of release had much specifically to do with the Iowa caucuses.

Speculating that it was a plant by another campaign seems to be compounding one unsubstantiated rumor with another.

If it's in the NE, might as well face it, it has to be true.

Sadly, this is the same kind of vicious, sneaky, underhanded, clandestine personal attack we saw from the Clinton's during their previous presidential reign. Bill and Hillary are masters of the "politics of personal destruction" as we saw when Hillary was in charge of the "Bimbo Squad" and tried to destroy any of Bill's female sexual assault victims who dared reveal the truth to the public.
Expect more of the same as long as the American public supports the Clintons.

An affair with a woman? I heard it was with Batboy.

Britney's little sister?

Dave, it's more bizarre to rerun a two-month-old story.

I cannot help but wonder how Edwards' girl would look when stacked up against Monica - are there any photos of her anywhere?

As Doug mentioned above, Brittany's little, 16 yr.old sister is with child. I should think we should all take this opportunity to sing Hossana in the highest with this pending addition to our country's gene pool along with Peace on Earth and Goodwill Toward Men.

My writing in the passive tense may have tripped you up. The National Enquirer reported this story two months ago; the article that you are citing was written on Oct. 10.

The reason for recycling the story, according to the Enquirer, was that they now had pictures that purported to show that the woman involved is pregnant. The new story referred to John Edwards' "love child." Apparently, the Enquirer had this new story on its web-site for a few hours and then pulled it. Your link does not go to the new story but only to the old one.

Why would you need to fabricate dirt on John Edwards? I can think of about a hundred reasons not to vote for the man right off the top of my head.

This seems to be a current story:

Again, very loose reporting.

I maintain that this story is not a coincidence. Edwards is a candidate for President, and the Clinton Campaign doesn't take any chances, especially when Hilliary's poll numbers are slumping. If you can send people out to talk about Obama's kindergarten presidential aspirations and selling drugs when he was a teenager, does anyone really believe that this story is a coincidence? Yes, the original story aired a few months ago, but it wasn't given much play. Now, it is needed as poll numbers tighten. just saying, look at Edwards' poll numbers in Iowa. This story will play well with the some of the good folks there.

"Rielle Hunter," wannabe actress/producer (aspiring double threat!), was paid $114,461 by Edwards’ One America Committee to produce a series of “webisodes” introducing people to the casual, “authentic” John Edwards. Why they picked this lady to make these videos is unclear — she really didn’t have much experience doing anything beyond being,* Confuse Conservative

Statement from the " Madame Justice" campaign

No doubt the opposition to my wife campaign in 08 has rearch a new low by the Clinton political machine by accusing her of sleeping with John Edwards. We have never met Mr Edwards nor have we ever engaged in any Republican Men's restroom taking tap dancing lessons for Jesus.

CM Berry...campaign adviser to Reille Hunter....oops

Why is it so unbelievable that an ambulance chaser's morals would also allow him to cheat on his wife?

Of course, its also not unbelievable that the Clintons planted this story--they will stop at (absolutely) nothing to win. See Sheehan comments about Obama.

Its all music to my ears.

No doubt you are not up to speed in the political music world. Last night on the Rev James Dodson family values Arkansas good old boy show, Governor Huckabee made a appearance and the band play " When the Saints go marching in"

And not to be outdone, The Rev Pat Robertson on his 700 club fundy show had his band play " I'II be glad when you are dead Charlie Brown" when Ron Paul made a brief appearance.

And to really top it off, The Rock band " Smoking Potters" play '' Smoke gets into your eyes Obama" at a Hillary Clinton fundraiser in Iowa.

Meanwhile, The Obama Marching campaign band " Opah and Dr Phil" play a recent new release " Sliping and Sliding with Hillary Husband"

The Edwards campaign was reach and they had no comment and put the interviewer on hold with Elevator music from the 60's

Guys, you all have too much time on your hands if this is all you can comment on. Doug, go out and report about something meaningful, not some NE trash. John Edwards isn't running close enough to anyone to waste the time and energy to slander him like this anyway. Besides, this sounds like a Rove tactic anyway.

Seth said:

Mike,

So if it Rove's dirty work, who's he working for HIllary or Obama?
