Time for Edwards to give up
Assertions from John Edwards' campaign (as reported by Mark) that the stuck-in-third candidate is going to do "better and better" as the race continues are ludicrous.
Just the opposite is true.
The former senator should give it up.
Whether he continues to pursue a hopeless chase would be strictly the business of him and his supporters ... if he weren't tapping into public campaign funds. He's costing taxpayers millions.
For what? Keeping "his issues" at center stage? Giving a voice to millions of Americans who haven't been heard?
Give me a break. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are appealing to a lot more Democrats. The people don't need Edwards to speak for them.
The longer he goes on, the more it looks like an ego trip. His candidacy is starting to look like Jesse Jackson's in 1984 and '88, and with Jackson it was all about ego.
Look, Edwards has campaigned for president longer and harder than anyone else. He's come up short. That's no disgrace ... unless he doesn't know when to quit. Then he becomes a disruption.
Clearly, he wants a role at the convention. He'll try to broker his delegates for something. He'll say it's about issues, but convention deals are usually made for more personal stakes, like an administration job. Edwards will try to keep his political career alive.
But I think he's in danger of throwing it away by hanging on past the point of credibility.
Very soon, maybe starting in Florida Tuesday, he's going to be polling consistently in the single digits. The media will stop paying attention, he'll draw small crowds, volunteers will drift away. A candidate who's only in it to make a convention deal for himself doesn't deserve to be taken seriously.
With Obama and Clinton squabbling, Edwards has referred to himself as the grownup candidate.
It's time for him to make a grownup decision.

John Edwards thinks big. I think he would like to be Vice-President or possibly Secretary of State. I wish I could buy him for what he is worth and sell him for what he thinks he is worth.

Right! So when are you going to tell Huckabee and Rudy G to give it up?

Can you imagine the size of John Edward's ego - yet the last time this phony balony ran for a national office he did not carry his precinct nor his county nor his state - looks as if his neighbors knew him best -

Unlike Edwards, Huckabee has a victory. But I said at the time I didn't think it amounted to much.
If Giuliani loses badly in Florida, he might not be around long.
I don't think Edwards wants to be veep, and he's not qualified to be secretary of state. More realistic posts, in my opinion, would be attorney general, secretary of labor or secretary of health and human services. But he'll only get a Cabinet job if he makes a delegate deal with Obama or Clinton -- and Clinton would only go along if she were really desperate heading in to the convention.

Since when is the NR concerned about taxpayers MONEY? Then you should be writing about the Tall Ship Ride, tearing up 20 million $ worth of I 40 that was screwed up. Parton Theater, civil rights museum, and all the other pork in NC. Edwards wants AG job, to support Obama. Democrat ticket Clinton and Obama. McCain on republican side a guaranteed loser. True conservatives like myself will take the day off.

Chances are that you will be at home with Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tornado, Tommy Thompson [ Fred's Northern Yankee cousin], Mit, Rudy, Alan Keyes,[ How in the heck did he get into the race] watching Custer's last stand by John McCain on the Fox network!

I find Edwards to be an exquisite exercise in self-parody. I can't bear to see him go! His sound bites alone are worth the investment of tax dollars.
I'd like a Democratic cabinet to include him as Secretary of Whinging.

I think Edwards is hanging on because he's eyeing the vice-president's spot on the ticket. If he stays in the race and keeps his name out there, at least to a small degree, he's more likely to get picked.
The best thing for the Democrats would be for the Hillary-Obama loser to get the VP spot. But it looks like there is too much bad blood between the camps for that to happen.

brian, is that like whining?
Hillary as veep? No way.
I don't think either Hillary or Obama would be interested in Edwards as veep. Too much ego and ambition for a No. 2.
For Obama, what about Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona? Bill Richardson would be a good choice for either one.
