Dot Kearns won't seek another term on school board

Like many High Pointers, I've known Dot Kearns for a very long time as a lady with a tender heart and tough hide. Except for a couple of years, she's held public office since 1972 -- on the High Point Board of Education, Guilford County Board of Commissioners and consolidated Guilford County Board of Education.

Kearns is announcing today she won't run for another term this year. At 76, she's ready to slow down and devote more time to visiting her out-of-state grandchildren.

This news will prompt celebrations among her critics, but not me. Although I've disagreed with her about a number of issues, I've always admired her honesty, her courage and her devotion to the causes she values. After all these years, it's time for someone else to take her place on the school board, but I'll rank her as one of the most dedicated elected officials I've ever encountered.

More later ...

Doug, if you think we're falling for this, think again.

She issued this statement a little later this afternoon:

Many of you with whom I've worked over the years:

This message is to share with you my intentions not to file for another term on the Guilford County Board of Education.

Over the last weeks I have been in conversation with several potential candidates whom I find to hold similar beliefs about the imperative power of public education in a democracy and who hold similar hopes for building a strong effective Guilford County School System as I hold. With that knowledge, I am comfortable to leave the At-Large Seat in new and vigorous hands.

I am indebted to the citizens of High Point, Greensboro and all of Guilford County for allowing me to serve as their representative on a Board of Education and the County Commission for many years.

We have an especially wonderful county. Nonetheless, there are on-going challenges - many of which can be best met by the continuing development of a vibrant public school system - designed and implemented to meet the needs of all our diverse student and family populations.

My hope is that county wide, citizens will give the new At-Large School Board member feedback and positive support as so many have given to me.

Doug, you're not just whistling Dixie about Dot's tireless devotion to causes she believes in. Of course, if you're an Ishmael desperately clinging to piece of High Point's educational flotsam after Captain Ahab Kearns' intermitable twelve- year persuit of the Great White Whale, you know this only too well.

One can only quake in fear of Dot's handpicked successor and only hope that this individual is not but one half as crazy as our never forgotten and forever- esteemed Dotvez Kearnshar-af.

Doug, its past time for her to retire. she has gotten her wish of lowering the standards at all 3 high point schools to the same low level. She's also maganaged to boost the attendance at every private school in the high point area. Much to ber proud of, I think. Scary thought though, of who she has picked for a replacement.

Doug said:

Guys, the voters will choose her replacement.

Doug, any guess whom the mystery candidate Dot has implied will carry on her hopes and aspirations for the district is?

I thought it was interesting when she said she didn't want to even run in the last two elections but she saw a void of her type of candidate. Lord knows you wouldn't want somebody like Jim Kirkpatrick- a fiscally responsible, well-respected, sucessful businessman, no-nonsense ex-Marine with a solid public service background on the board when you can have... a.... a Dot.

Skeet Club Savage said:

Oh, and Doug, the Simkins Pac and The Democratic party will pick the next at-large schoolboard member. When you can deliver 5,ooo votes in a single schoolboard district for a candidate who moved to Wilmington and withdrew from the race several months before the election, you would have to worry about a candidate who actually still lives here's chances.

I'm not going to throw any stones at Dot Kearns. I'm sure she is a good person and a dedicated official, as you say Doug.

However, her policies are a brand of liberalism that is a proven failure: Tax 'n' spend. Bigger government. An obsession with race. And above all, the belief that government, not the people, knows what's best.

In a lot of ways, Mrs. Kearns reminds me of former President Jimmy Carter. Both were good-hearted people who honestly believed they were doing the right thing, but their liberal politics ended up doing far more harm than good.

Setting: A torch-lit wooded glade, deep in the heart of Emerywood during the recent blood-red moon lunar eclipse.

Dot, along with other faithful like Mendenhall, Debbie Gallimore et;al, possibly also including Doug Clark, meet with the "Candidate Which She Will Not Name".

Dot: We have brought you here tonight for you to swear your blood oath. Repeat after me.
" I Dot Kearns,"

Candidate That Dot Won't Name: "I Dot Kearns"

Dot: Sorry, I wanted you to give your name.

CTDWN: Oh...I , Candidate That You Won't Name...

Dot: Do solemnly swear this blood oath

CTDWN: Do solemnly swear this blood oath...

DOT: To do everything in my power, to keep Central Highschool, the traditional white Highschool in High Point, as white as possible. I will spare no nessessary means of accomplishing this task, including; under the cover of "diversity" in order to fool liberal members of the press and fellow boardmembers and Simkins PAC, take such people from other schools, whether via magnetization, re-districting, or even lottery, and including such means as buying busing votes on the board thru increasing the limit on no-bid contracts benefitting friends of certain minority boardmembers, and will employ all these measures despite the fact that such may seriously damage and divide my community and as well as the two major towns of the county, as well as politically damage the Superindendant and fellow boardmembers who support me and will delay the implementation of actually effective educational measures by years. Failing all else, I will even, out of desperation, steal the last remaining white kids at Andrews via the annexation of Blairwood. I will do my best to carry out these measures, so help me God.

CTDWN: Ah, Dot I don't think I can sign on for this...I had no idea you were this...far gone... I...

CTDWN takes off running.

DOT: Doug, you're a runner, stop him! You can run but you can't hide!

Doug said:

I think the comparison to Jimmy Carter is apt.

As for whom she has in mind as a qualified candidate, she should make her own endorsement. Maybe it's E.C.

What would you say, Erik?

I would be shocked, Doug.

You forgot the part of the oath where you threaten to change your will from UNCG if the debates don't go how you want them to.

You need to be writing plays. I see a pulitzer in your future or at least a Tony Award.

Doug:

Why did you erase all the old posts to this strand. My friends didn't get to read all them. Could you please put them back.

Sorry Doug. I see there are two Dot strands. Do two Dots make a Dash? Yep a Dash to run away from what would have been a great election defeat.

The only dilemma we now face is what to do with all the money waitng to buy Rhino ads and brand new and improved 3-D displays by SW schools? People are still asking what happened to those holiday displays.
