Dressed like Buckley
My family connection to William F. Buckley, the conservative pundit who died yesterday:
My Uncle Jack wore his clothes.
Back in the late-'30s, early '40s, my grandmother worked as a housekeeper at Millbrook School, a tony boarding school in Millbrook, N.Y., attended by William Buckley (Class of '43) and his older brother James (Class of '39).
My grandmother was a widow with two kids, an Irish immigrant who worked hard to make ends meet during tough times.
She brought home discarded clothes from the Buckley boys for her son, who was just a couple of years younger than William.
"What did Uncle Jack think about that?" I asked my mom last night.
"He hated it," Mom recalled. "He was 15, 16 years old. Kids that age don't like wearing hand-me-downs."
I guess he just didn't appreciate how famous the original owners were going to be.

Doug, you have to look on the bright side-at least he wasn't cross dressing-a quirk rumored to have developed in the following generation.

But then my mom might have gotten some benefit.
