Good for Nick Kristof. I hope Leonard Pitts reads this.

But even Kristof's "defense" of conservative Christians reads like a back-handed compliment, doesn't it?
I mean, the disdain for evangelical Christianity and its practitioners almost drips off the page in this column. It's as if he's saying, "Hold your nose and these backward rubes can be useful."
Quite frankly, I'm not sure that's preferable to what Pitts had to say.

I agree. At least he's admitting that liberals are biased against evangelicals. But he seems to be saying they deserve respect only when they're advocating what he views as liberal causes.
I would point out that helping the poor, serving the needy, etc., are fundamental Christian causes. The difference between conservative Christians and many liberals is that conservatives usually don't expect government to do it.

Exactly right, Doug.
It's also preposterous that Kristof thinks that conservative Christians helping the poor is somehow a recent development. In fact, it's a tradition that goes back hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
