Terrorism at home

Homes burned, possibly by a reputed ecoterrorist group ...

The bombing of a military recruiting station in Times Square ...

A writer on the liberal Daily Kos blog expects a " 'Left-Wing Terrorism' Smear Coming."

Like they say, the best defense is a good offense.

Unfortunately, there are dangerous nuts of all political persuasions around. I don't think mainstream liberals and conservatives should be associated with any of them.

I doubt we'll see a surge in domestic terrorism. But then, just one lunatic can cause a tremendous amount of damage.

I hope all terrorists are caught and dealt with as the criminals they are.

Daily KOS, hardly one to accuse anyone of anything? The best defense is a good offense.
That's what KOS is doing. They are getting the liberal press to point the finger at somene else. Code pinks and ELF, are not conservatives, they are terrorist groups protected by the liberal press.

Doug, do you want them dealt with as criminals or as terrorists?

Doug said:

It would depend on the facts of a particular incident. I'm not using legal terms, but there are laws that determine the appropriate responses.

Roch101 said:

Huh? As you acknowledge, terrorists are treated differently than criminals (a distinction made and asserted by Bush and right-wingers). Yet you want ALL terrorists treated "as the criminals they are."

Doug said:

When would a terrorist bombing, or arson, not be a crime?

I made the statement for the benefit of those who might think they're advancing a political cause, putting themselves on a higher moral plane ... when they're just criminals.

I'd agree that it would. As you are aware, however, under this administration, a policy has been developed not to treat terrorists as criminals so that they aren't afforded due process.

So what I'm wondering, and perhaps should have asked to begin with is, do you disagree with the administration's policies or do you think, as you wrote, that all terrorists should be treated as criminals?

Sorry, should have written: Do you agree with the administration's policies or do you think all terrorists should be treated as criminals.

Doug said:

Sorry, didn't see where you were going.

I think terrorists should be treated as criminals, with exceptions, such as those captured abroad in situations akin to war; i.e. Afghanistan. I would disagree with the Bush administration's original treatment of Jose Padilla. A non-U.S. citizen like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, however, is a different matter and I'm frankly unsure what would have been the best way to deal with him legally. I haven't heard anyone come up with the perfect solution.

I see where you are coming from, and I agree -- I thought you were saying that all terrorists are criminals, I didn't think that allowed for some being agents of war. International treaties apply in those cases.

just saying said:

Acts of terrorism, such as the Times Square bombing, should be considered capital offenses, in my opinion.
