NAACP takes a poisoned view of Bellamy's GPD

The alleged destruction of the 1979 mystery files was set in the timeframe of David Wray's tenure as Greensboro police chief. It fits the perception some have developed of Wray as a secretive wrongdoer.

But it seems to me that the state NAACP, in calling for a federal investigation, is strongly attacking current Chief Tim Bellamy and his administration.

"We trust that more professional and objective law enforcement officers will be able to quickly ascertain the truth of the allegations ..." the letter signed by N.C. NAACP President William J. Barber II said.

"The officer who broke the Blue No Snitch Rule ... is in obvious danger," Barber's missive adds. "We therefore are requesting a federal investigation of the Greensboro Police Department with full witness protection services for those honest officers who have and will come forward."

This assumes a lot. It assumes there is "credible evidence" that 50 boxes of files related to the Klan/Nazi/CWP shootout existed and were then discarded. It assumes they were unique files, segregated from others and with no backup files. It assumes that they will reveal "the truth of what happened in Greensboro in November 1979" -- and that this "truth" has yet to be uncovered (so much for the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission).

More pointedly, it assumes that the current leadership of the Greensboro Police Department is continuing the conspiracy to hide this truth. The conspiracy is so determined that the lives of those who dare to crack it will be in such danger that "full witness protection services" will be required to keep them safe.

What a poisoned, paranoid view of the police department and its current leaders.

Whomever comes up short in this deal needs to be held fully accountable by all races, factions, political parties, etc. The Pulpit Forum and the NAACP are "all in" on this one. What is left of the GPD is on the line as well.

But that's not going to happen, Mick. The Pulpit Forum has been making these half-cocked, crazy statements for years now -- remember when they tried to organize a school boycott? Or their baseless attacks on Florence Gatten? And how did those turn out?

But no one ever holds them accountable -- not the public and not the media. They still are held up as credible community representatives and the N&R still covers them as though they were.

This story will follow the same pattern as all the other "news" stories involving the Pulpit Forum. It'll make headlines for a week or two and people will be up in arms about it. Then, as folks realize there's no proof to these outrageous claims, it'll quickly and quietly fade away.

Then, in a few months, the Pulpit Forum will make another ridiculous claim of racism. And the cycle will repeat itself....

It also helps the NCAAP's reputation, unfortunately for as "the boy who cried wolf" for whites and as defender for the race for blacks. It's a no win situation as no matter the outcome, there will always be those who will claim there was a cover-up.

Nelson J, Ron R, Tim B, James H., Fingers, Jay F, Dianne BS,Pulpit Forum, (oh yeh, Mitch J.also); The citizens of Greensboro are thoroughly ashamed of the way you manipulate lies and half truth with politically charged and racially divisive rhetoric. You are all responsible for the corruption in our City management and Police Dept., and all responsible for the Change in connotation of BLACK ACTIVIST. Whereas the term once described one who championed the cause of the disenfranchised and powerless YOU have made it to mean the same as KLAN MEMBER and NAZI. With you serving as the example, we shall teach our children that any kind of activist of your ilk, white or black, are no different than Hitler, Saddam, of any hood wearing Klan member. You continue to lie, cheat, and manipulate for personal gain. Why don't you just move away and leave Greensboro a peaceful future without your constant lies and racial inferiority complex.

NAACP Greensboro Inquiry
Frank Stasio and Katie Macpherson
Tuesday, March 04 2008

On November 3, 1979, protesters gathered in Greensboro to participate in a “Death to the Klan” march. After being confronted by a group of armed Klansmen and Nazis, five of the anti-Klan marchers were killed and 10 others were wounded. Almost thirty years later, the North Carolina NAACP is requesting a federal investigation of the Greensboro Police Department. They say investigative records from the shootings have been secretly destroyed.

One hopes the Rev's have some cards on this that they are not showing, because if this turns out to be all paranoid hysteria, all the pro-Wray people will be completely vindicated.

They really seem to be going out on a limb.

I mean, it's understandable how somebody who was at the 1979 shootings and saw his friends shot down, no matter if you think the cause was right or wrong, and the attendant survivor guilt etc., that he would have taken some type of blood oath to never let these men be forgotten- no matter what, no matter if it's thirty or fifty years later. He can't let them die a second time. It's noble and admirable in a way. But then this brushes up against the reality that it can become harmful and obstructive and counter to the need for the town to move on.

Savage, Nelson Johnson & company crossed that bridge a LONG time ago. They have done a tremendous amount of damage to race relations in Greensboro over the past 30 years.

When you look at the growth of the Triad and just the nomadic nature of modern American life, I would wager that only about 30% or less of the people now living in the Triad were even here in '79. All the police are gone. Who are they going after?

Another thing that bothers me about the claim that the whistleblower's life would be in danger:

If they believe someone would kill to protect this secret, they certainly are reckless with Craig McMinn's life.

All of this sound and fury seems to be based upon that one blue whistleblower. There seems to be nothing, but what we are told is one cop's verbal statement that 50 boxes of files were destroyed by dumping in a dumpster. If we are going to get an FBI investigation over one unknown person's claims, this city has gone down the tubes, my friends. Why is this given credibility by the city council and media, where as David Wray and his command staff were called racists and liers, and shown the door? The city's own tapes show that legal department and RMA didn't allow them to present their case with any credibility. Of course, those members of legal and RMA don't have any credibility either.

So, now we do know the name of the officer -- Julius Fulmore. His attorney dismisses the notion that Fulmore's life is in danger. That was a ridiculous assertion by the NAACP. Perhaps all the officers supposedly involved can be identified to police investigators and interviewed about this mysterious incident, and everything can be cleared up.

Mick said:

Why do these same names keep popping up over and over and over.

I came upon this tonight and wondered how rumors and innuendos begin. I see rhetoric with no basis from folks who were not there. I was there, a young police officer in Greensboro, one who marched along beside the CWP as they held their Memorial March after the shootout - protecting them from the Klan. The kept crying, Cops and the Klan - hand in hand. I'll never forget that day, rainy and cold. So cold that I could not zip my pants up after I relieved myself. Luckily, I had rainpants over my uniform pants. It was a NO WIN for officers. We were being spit upon by the CWP marchers and the Klan was trying to get into town to kill some more communist. We were trying to keep them out and they hated us for that. There was no conspiracy, just stupid hatred, ignorance and prejudice from both sides.
