Plumber-gate
Our editorial board interviews with candidates sometimes take an odd twist or two.
That was the case yesterday when we met with the three Democrats running for the 6th District congressional seat held by Republican Howard Coble.
I brought up a statement Jay Ovittore had made on our questionnaire about one of his rivals:
"John Carter is Howard's plumber, so I certainly have never received payment of any sort from Howard."
I asked Johnny Carter, who's general manager of Williams Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, if that was true.
"I'm not Howard's plumber," he said.
Ovittore answered that Carter's company does plumbing work for Coble.
Carter said that's not true.
I tried to get a clear statement on this critical matter, asking Carter point blank: "Are you now or have you ever been Howard Coble's plumber?"
"No."
I asked Ovittore if that put the matter to rest.
Not really, he said, adding some sort of allegation about Carter's company belonging to a trade association whose PAC made a campaign contribution to Coble.
That just didn't seem worth pursuing.
The third candidate, Teresa Sue Bratton, wisely stuck to serious topics.

When Carter first filed to run, Coble mentioned to me that Carter's company had done work on his home...not sure whether it was plumbing or HVAC.
I reported that here: http://tinyurl.com/6m4bba
That said - It is seems to be a pretty ridiculous statement to say that someone's company did work for Coble and therefore the person is unqualified somehow to run for the office.

I know absolutely nothing about Johnny Carter. But even if he did do plumbing work for Howard Coble, how is that the least bit relevant to this campaign?
I mean, Mr. Carter works for a plumbing company - that's how he makes his living. I assume Williams Plumbing doesn't screen customers based on political affiliation, right? I bet if you or I called them up, they would come work on our homes, too. By this ridiculous standard, nearly everyone who works for a living would be disqualified from public service.
If this is the best Mr. Ovittore can come up with, he's not making a very compelling case for himself.

Thanks, Mark. Your earlier post does indicate that the business Carter works for did plumbing for Coble.
How that's relevant to the campaign I don't know. There seems to be some implication that Carter is corrupted as a candidate. That's unfair, to say the least
Certainly that's not the best Ovittore can do, but readers can look at his Web site and decide for themselves.

Has Carter been asked yet why he doesn't vote?

"How that's relevant to the campaign I don't know."
It's not. Carter's answer to the question is.

Regrettably, we overlooked the question of Carter's voting frequency. That would be relevant.

Sounds like a vast right-wing plumbing conspiracy!

Wow! While you are at it! Why don't you ask Mr Carter? " Are you now or have ever been a communist plumber? Remember Mr Carter, you are under oath to this journalist"
"No."* Mr Carter
Mr Journalist Chairman! Let me correct that " No" It is possible that I might have met a Congressman or Senator in a Airport men's restroom on a repair job! Mr Chairman! On the advice of my lawyer! I am taking the 5 th amendent since this involves personal matters and possible criminal plumbering communications issues."
I asked Ovittore if that put the matter to rest.* Doug
Of course not! The issue has not been flush down the drain of public opinion.
Not really, he said, adding some sort of allegation about Carter's company belonging to a trade association whose PAC made a campaign contribution to Coble.
That just didn't seem worth pursuing.* Doug
Sure it worth pursuing Doug! If Mr Carter company has donated to a special interest PAC in Republican public crap and Mr Carter approve it, Than Jay has a case against his political opposition for hurling stuff up against political restroom walls and seeing what will stick in a journalist mind?

It does seem strange that a man who has never voted suddenly decides to run for Congress. I can't help but wonder about his sudden interest in the democratic process and I don't think any rational voter wouldn't be concerned.

In the establishment political world! Mr Carter would be called a Ringer reguardless of his non-concern for democracy or it's principles. The key to this little so-called watergate story that Doug has dream up is simple. Smear Jay!
Ask yourself one question? Do you think Jay slipped into Mr Carter Plumbering service shop in the middle of the night to find a black manual that show Congressman Coble deadly septic tank plans to take over the world or is possible that Jay is anti-war, a major or big time supporter of constitutional rights, a great young American that really gives a damn about saving this country by giving it a effort to challenge the present establishment political system that discourages concern citizens like him to change the system.
Go Jay! Jesse Ventura would be proud of "real" Patriots like you!
