Father makes a difference for Lowe II
I believe Sidney Lowe II was granted almost unheard of leniency for serious crimes not only because of who his father is but because of where his father was yesterday ...
... in court with his son.
Yes, the senior Lowe's status as N.C. State basketball coach and his financial assets assured that he could hire the best defense attorneys for his son. An ordinary defendant, lacking those advantages, likely would have been given at least the minimum term called for by structured sentencing guidelines.
Judge Henry Frye Jr. found extraordinary mitigating circumstances to justify a term of 15 months at the minimum-security Guilford County prison farm. The young Lowe completed drug treatment, apologized and promised to make something great of his life.
Anyone could do that.
What really seems to separate him from so many other young men pulled into the criminal-justice system is his strong support system including a mother and father, as well as other family members.
Maybe they should have done more to keep Sidney II out of trouble in the first place, but it's reasonable to expect they'll do everything possible to keep him out of trouble again after he finishes his 15 months of easy time.
He'lll have a better chance than many other defendants who never had a supportive family, let alone a father to embrace him and declare, "I feel I have my son back."

What disturbs me about the parental support is that they are blaming A&T for their son's demise into drugs. According to court records, he had a conviction in 2005 for misdemeanor possession of up to one-half ounce of marijuana and a 2002 conviction for misdemeanor assault in 2002. That's when they should have been crying and trying to get him on the right road.

A sentence should be hard enough to correct the behavior of the convicted, provide comfort to the harmed, and make the public fear and respect the law. Does this sentence accomplish any of that?

Not really! When you have kids that get into trouble, A real Parnet will hock everything to save them.
What do you want? 5 years in a hard core prison, digging ditches and being waterboard 3 times a day?
Americans really believe in giving a person a 2nd chance, unless one's conservative mind-set is a law and order mentality that destroys the soul and mind of a individual.

Rediculous comment such as above are trademarks of the Liberal Loony Left. They love making such outrageous comment even though they know it's fiction, but somehow they justify such comment in thier skewed minds. The felon should have gotten 5 years (your recommendation), and fed 3 times a day unfortunately at the tax payers expense. Today's justice is not given out on a level playing field.

BTW Doug,
If the furniture market is so hugely profitable why in the world does Becky Smothers have to ask the state for additional funding! Is the true story about the viability of the furniture market being told, or in reality is the Vegas market making a bigger impact than the powers to be want the citizens of High Point to know. Sorry to get a little off track but I wanted to respond to your response from yesterday.

Justice was not served well here. I do not find fault in Mr. and Mrs. Lowe fighting to minimize the penalty for their son. Any parent would and should do as well. However, I do find fault with Judge Frye getting celebrity struck. Lowe saying that he'll do better in the future is just words. I'll bet that Lowe does find himself in court again in the future, unless he does a better job of avoiding arrest. Why did it take this event for Lowe the Senior to feel that he finally had his son back? Did he not know that he had lost him? Had he done anything to get him back before, if he did?
Sure, Americans believe in second chances, Connie, but perhaps after they have paid their dues to society for their first mistake (actually it seems that he has two prior mistakes in 2002 and 2005). How, pray tell, does application of law and order to a felony crime destroy the mind and soul of an individual (at least unfairly)? It's a matter of consequences of your actions that every person should learn when they are in short pants. The unfortunate thing is that most young people these days don't learn that lesson early or in less painful ways, because their parents don't teach them..

I am also disturbed about the trashing of A&T, which Judge Frye should have rejected.
Also, I don't know how Lowe could tell the judge he'd never been in trouble before. Does a judge automatically believe everything a defendant says?

Folks get upset with me, when I speak of Good Ole Boy justice in NC. Seems I am not the only one! The trashing of A&T was completely uncalled for in my opinion.

Well!
Some questions.
Is there such a thing as a conservative communist?
Retard dumb republican is redundant. Just republican will do.
Most important.
What is a Dude?

Stormy, if you are right about Mr. Lowe being back in court then, he will be looking at long term hard time because he will be on probation. Also, this is a felony conviction. It's not something that's going to be expunged off anybody's record. It will follow Mr. Lowe and be considered in any dealings with the legal system Mr. Lowe has for the rest of his life.
Prison is a soul killer. This guy went down the wrong path. I know others did. I know there are people in prison who have gotten shafted.
I know one of these crimes involved a shooting. Does anybody know the current status of the victim of this shooting or was anyone actually shot? I don't recall.
Because his dad has means, this may not be over for the Lowe's. They may be looking at civil actions etc.

Clearly, "celebrity justice" -- the idea that famous people don't have to play by the same rules as the rest of us -- is alive and well in Judge Frye's court.
If the defendant's name had been Sidney Smith Jr., instead of Sidney Lowe Jr., there's no doubt that he would have received at least the minimum sentence, meaning three years in prison.
Instead, star-struck Judge Frye let Lowe Jr. off with what amounts to a "Don't do it again" warning. Was justice served here? Of course not. Lowe Jr. committed multiple violent felonies. It's not like he got nailed for smoking pot or shoplifting a pack of gum.
I wonder if Frye asked for Coach Lowe's autograph on his way out of the courtroom?

" You can find Dudes in the far west of the United States on Horse And CattleTourist Ranches. In fact, just a couple of years ago, they made a promotional movie call " Brokenback Mountain Republican Dudes"
