Local press on Green and Prince
Charlotte-Meck school board member Trent Merchant calls Maurice Green "a no-brainer for Greensboro," the Observer reports.
Shirley Prince "would be sorely missed" by Scotland County Schools if she left for Guilford County, board chairman Buck Carter tells the Laurinburg Exchange.
What's your opinion about the two candidates?

How can anyone who states he has "mixed" emotions about taking a job be a "no brainer", unless Mr. Merchant literally means Guilfordians would have to have " no brains" to get excited by this statement?
I mean everyone always has mixed emotions about leaving one job, one place, and going to another (Okay, maybe Grier was an exception) but you don't lead with a statement like this if you really want the job.

Also, saying you are "intrigued" by a job offer is exec speak for " Thanks, but you are out of you flippin' mind".
If you want a job, you don't go in and say this job intrigues me. You say you want the job, end of story.

These are comments by two different people. Obviously, merchant thinks it should be a no-brainer for Guilford to offer Green the job.
Whether Green think's it would be a no-brainer to accept an offer may be a different matter.
Then again, one usually tells his current employers that it would be a hard decision to leave. It's just diplomatic.

Doug, I'm not getting you with the "two different people" thing. The article quotes Green as saying he is "intrigued" and has "mixed emotions", does it not?

Right, but the no-brainer comment came from a second person.

Oh, sorry Doug. I see you were referring to the "no brainer" statement. One would hope the candidate himself would not say this.

I hope not. The idea of a non-educator leading the school system doesn't sit well with some. I'm not convinced, however, that a Ph.D. in education qualifies one to run a half-billion-dollar entity.
Of course, neither does a law degree.

Looks like the teachers are leaning more toward partying like it's Nineteen Ninty-Nine. The Wizard of OZ would still be around to help with the business aspects I guess.

A classic case of comparing an education insider and former NC superintendent of the year with an education outsider who has spent 2 years working as a nuts and bolts guy for someone else. Green may be an "up and comer" but I would have to see that he understands the state-driven education system we have in NC before I would find him acceptable. Dr. Prince has already shown her mettle and would be a fine candidate.
On the other hand, thinking outside the box might be good... Obviously the Board of Ed was "intrigued" themselves with Green. I would like to know more.

Knowing more is critical. What was it the school board found most compelling about these candidates? What particular achievements impressed the board? We haven't heard that yet, although Morgan is calling board members, and I'm trying to touch base with some.
It appears not all are on board with the two finalists (see Garth's comments at the Chalkboard). I hope he's wrong that the board doesn't really want feedback from the public. That is very, very important.

Doug,
Really - do you believe the board wants our feedback? They've already publicized that they're having a closed session board meeting Wednesday night. I speculate that it's to vote on the next superintendent.
So they solicit feedback from 5:00 - 7:00 and then vote??? There's no time for them to absorb the input.
It's all for show.
Smoke and mirrors.
The decision has already been made.

I know that not all board members want to decide Wednesday night.
Maybe it will happen anyway, but it would be a big mistake. You simply do not invite the public to look over the candidates and then pick one without listening to the public response.
