A really sleazy politician

By the time I heard about John Edwards' confession late in my Michigan vacation, I'd already been reading all week about the latest twists in the sordid saga of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Edwards aptly admitted that his egotism led him to believe he could get away with anything, but I'd say the formerly perpetual presidential candidate is a model of decency and virtue compared to Kilpatrick, for whom adultery was just the opening act.

Once a political star, Edwards has ruined his chances of returning to public office, hurt his remarkable wife and disappointed his followers. Kilpatrick, however, is dragging down a reeling city that desperately needs strong, honest leadership but is saddled with this lurid drama of its mayor's disgraceful descent.

While Edwards ought to retire from the public's eye, Kilpatrick is in danger of being put away ... and for Detroit, the sooner the better.

Please don't be too hard on poor John Edwards - I mean, after all his wife's cancer was in remission when he hooked up with his Monica Lewinsky wannabe.

Doug said:

Yeah, his sincerity overwhelmed me, too.

White businessmen balking at trying to get rid of scumbags because they don't want to be branded as racists? Where have we seen this before?

This Kwame business is obviously a typical conspiracy by some white institutionalized- rascists to slander a good man.

Kwame needs the Mitchster!!!

Doug said:

Yeah, Kwame's a victim.

Are you kidding! Detriot has always been a den of corruption and the present Mayor was simply doing what was normal and sane in a gangter mind set. As to Edwards, The dude was much sicker than I thought in a world of unreality. Edwards was taken out by the higher powers within the Democrat establishment party and knew of the Edwards phony ploy from day 1 in presidental politics.

North Carolina is truly a den of political corruption now after watching the state establishment leadership of both parties in action.

It's amazing Edwards got away with this for so long. What if he'd actually won the nomination? The Dems would be in big trouble. Now, his troubles are no loss.

Tony Moschetti said:

Won the nomination? Wouldn't one have to finish higher than third in most primaries, and poll higher than 10-15 percent to win the nomination?

This slug was no more than another example of the elite left-wing media trying to push someone who pushes their agenda. Too bad he wasn't a negro. He would have then won the nomination!

I agree with Holden. It was really thoughtful of John to wait until his wife's cancer was in remission before not fathering his love child and not paying her hush money. I wish all husbands could be so thoughtful.

Mom Clark said:

Mayor Kilpatrick of Detroit comes by his arrogance naturally. His mother who is a Congresswoman from his district is up for re-election again. She was quoted as saying "I will stay in Congress as long as I decide not to"

He only "got away with it" because liberal media (such as the N&R) refused to air the allegations when they first came out.
If this had been Karl Rove or some other Republican we would have read and heard nothing else until the guy was hounded into oblivion.
Never underestimate the power of the press to tell us what to think and when to think it.

Doug said:

It's important to be sure of facts before reporting a story.

It's also impossible to say how the story might have been handled differently if the subject had been Karl Rove or some other Republicans.

The media have exposed plenty of Dem politicians for similar escapades, including Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick (story broken by the Detroit Free Press) and former NY Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who was a darling of the liberal media in New York.

Do you really think we're that naive, Doug?

No, but I am saying that your statement is speculation.

Simple! He is a trial lawyer with many connections among the other hustlers in the business and it was just another legal plan B to run circles around the mainstream media as a Presidental candiate. I can assure you the other top candiates knew what a scumbag he was and had the file on him ready to go if he got too serious about being a competitor or challenging the system. It appears that he was sold out by somebody very close to him in the end. I believe when he said he wanted a postion in the Obama agenda should he be elected was the sign to take him out. I think you wrote a story about this Doug and wonder what the Obama campaign thought or how much Edwards would bring to the Obama table which was about Zero for Obama since they were aware of his corruption and it would take away from the Democrat convention in the next two weeks with a media storm. The powers to be cut their loses which was easy since Edwards is a wimp and coward in the end. As to his wife, She is either navie or just stupid or either caught up with the excitement of high power politics and the fame of it. The only thing that I feel for this family is for the children which will have this issue over their head for many years.

As to legal advice! John Edwards should shut up and his wife should shut up too as I see possible major legal issues coming forth to both of them. She should consult with a high power mean ass divore lawyer and clean her husband clock and focus on her health, since this kind of stress leads to a breakdown of her health, which is very weak as I suspect at the moment.

John Edwards like Jim Black and many others of this Democrat mind set bought into this political trap like M.C. Hammer [ I can't be touch] or like most political and sport fools who started to believe their media clipping, which always leads to false security in life.

This country is in serious trouble and this story is another example to take away the focus on the chaos to come.

Speculation? Seems I recall the Duke Rape Case. Do not remember facts being important in this! Now there seems to be 3-8 million dollars involved in this sham. Does not seem to be a outcry from the liberal media, to investigate this. Now my question is where the IRS, and the NC department of Revenue, must be hassling a 15 thousand dollar a year waitress.

just saying said:

Well, John Edwards was a darling of the liberal North Carolina media, including the N&R. The big newspapers in the state did their best to try to downplay the John Edwards story.

Doug said:

I think newspapers were properly cautious about the story. Many learned a lesson from the Duke case about rushing to judgment or sensationalizing unfounded charges.

As for Edwards being a media darling in North Carolina, I think that was true early in his political career. But it's my opinion that even liberal newspaper people wised up to him years ago. Since 2004, Edwards definitely was more popular with voters and the media in places like Iowa than he was in his home state.

Doug, your exposure to the liberals at the N&R have apparently affected your judgement. You've conveniently forgotten the NY Crimes 3000 word. front page, unsourced, thoriughly debunked hit piece concerning an alleged McCain affair with a lobbyst! It is anything but speculation how they deal differently with Demo-Rats, particularly liberal D-Rats than they do with conservative Republicans.

It was Fred Dicker of the NY Post who long reported on the corruptness of Spitzer on issues much more serious than the issue that finally brought him down. As usual, the "Crimes" and the most of the rest of the elite, liberal, erroneously referred to as the "mainstream" media was way behind on the Spitzer thing, just like they tried to bury the Jeremiah Wright bombshell, and the Edwards sleaze. It's what they do!

" I don't know what made John Edwards do that stupid act. I wish a real person will step up to political plate and end all of this corruption." *paraphasing Doug Dream

Don't worry Doug! Help is on the way according to Dick Cheney campaign slogan in 2000. Can I count on your vote since you saw what I did to John Edwards...... And by way, how do you like it since I gave you this first story.

I didn't believe that phony news story from the moment it called you an unknown. Connie, you're already on Internet most wanted lists around the world.

Doug,

Your paper has been in this empty suit's pocket since he was elected to his first, and only, term in the US Senate. The N&R editorial board chose to endorse him over the incumbent in that race, Lauch Faircloth, who I have had the pleasure to meet and speak with at length ( a good man,by the way) One of Edwards' biggest cheerleaders over the years has been your own Rosemary Roberts, who has yet to be heard since this scandal was broken by the tabloids (certainly not by your paper). John Edwards,Jim Black, Mike Easley, Bill Clinton, are all in a long list of liberal politicians who can do what they want and never get called on it by your paper (as long as they are for higher taxes and more spending).

As far as the Mayor of Detroit is concerned, that is business as usual in the Motor City.

Doug said:

I wasn't here then, but I believe you're right that the N&R endorsed Edwards over Faircloth in 1998. Edwards impressed a lot of people at first. I can say, however, that this newspaper cooled considerable to him over the years and definitely has not been in his pocket for a very long time, if ever.

Let me address Jim Black. I'm proud that we were the first North Carolina newspaper to call for his resignation, back in December 2005.
