Football fumbles
The top three from last week's poll all badly underperformed Saturday, clearing the way for Carolina to move up on the strength of a big win at Miami.
The formerly No. 1 Wake Forest Deacons threw it away against Navy, leaving Wingate as North Carolina's only unbeaten team. Duke moves up to a surprising No. 3 by crushing Virginia.
Tar Heel Top Nine
1. UNC, 3-1 (No. 4 last week)
2. Wake, 3-1 (1)
3. Duke, 3-1 (5)
4. State, 2-3 (2)
5. East Carolina, 3-2 (3)
6. Elon, 4-1 (6)
7. Appalachian, 2-2 (7)
8. Wingate, 5-0 (9)
9. N.C. A&T, 2-3 (8)

NC State sounded pitiful on the radio.

I was at the State game. Got wet, Very wet. They ran into a buzz saw. USF is crazy good. Their offense is exactly like the NFL Patriots (before Brady got hurt.)with the added weapon that the QB Grothe can run like a running back if all his (five) receivers are covered and there's no defenders left to cover him.
State refused to blitz because of all the recievers out and their D-Line got no pressure.
Wasn't pretty.

NC State sounded pitiful on the radio* Mark
Any football game sounds pitiful on radio now, since nobody listens anymore.

The USF Superior football program is run by a former NFL star and leader who can recuirt the best kids in Florida without a problem. Why do you think FSU and Miami University programs have gone south so fast?
State or the ACC is in trouble when it comes to getting the best kids in the nation to recuirt.

FSU didn't look so bad against Colorado, making Wake's win down there last week more impressive ...
... except Wake sounded really awful on the radio yesterday.
Can the Deacs get it back together in time for Clemson?

Davidson won its second straight, with a stirring 24 point comeback in the fourth quarter over Jacksonville University.
Just thought I'd mention that.

Doug, isn't it about time you gave up the charade that NC has a "top nine"? Coming from SEC country, I am naturally contemptuous of any pretensions this state might harbor of football competence. But instead of merely pointing out the delusional nature of such a list--one might as list the "Best New Kids on the Block" or the "Most Riveting Games in Soccer History"--I have a concrete suggestion: rename the list the "bottom nine" and invert the order. The "winner" would thus be honestly labeled as the least bad team in the state.

John, Davidson lost to Pembroke, which lost to Wingate.
North Carolina teams vs. SEC this year: App lost to LSU, State lost to South Carolina but Wake beat Ole Miss. Still to come: Vandy plays both Duke and Wake (though not at the same time). I predict Duke and Wake will win those games and establish North Carolina superiority over the SEC.
