Carolina avenges Joe Montana game

The last time Notre Dame played in Chapel Hill, the Irish brought in a young quarterback named Joe Montana who filled the air with long touchdown passes. The Irish passed plenty yesterday but couldn't outscore the Tar Heels this time. Carolina wins and keeps its top ranking in our poll.

Wake Forest stuffed Clemson on Thursday, pointing to a big showdown with the Tar Heels ... no, wait. The too-big-for-its-own-good ACC didn't schedule a Carolina-Wake game this season. The Heels and Deacons will have to set one up themselves, Dec. 6 in Tampa.

Meanwhile, what has happened to East Carolina?

Tar Heel Top Eight

1. UNC, 5-1 (No. 1 last week)
2. Wake, 4-1 (2)
3. Elon, 6-1 (3)
4. App, 4-2 (4)
5. State, 2-4 (5)
6. Duke, 3-2 (7)
7. ECU, 3-3 (7)
8. Wingate, 7-0 (8)

Joe Montana came in to that game with only 5 minutes left, and threw exactly one touchdown pass that afternoon.

That will teach me to rely on my memory. I attended that game, and seem to have embellished Montana's credentials somewhat.

Per this N&O story ...

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/unc/story/1245628.html

Montana entered the game on Oct. 11, 1975, with a little more than six minutes left and the Irish trailing 14-6. He threw a 39-yard pass, but the receiver was downed at the 2. The touchdown was scored on a subsequent running play. Then Montana completed a pass for the two-point conversation. Next, he completed a pass that turned into an 80-yard TD for the winning score. He finished 3-of-4 passing for 129 yards, one TD and one conversion -- not bad numbers

I was there too.
We had just moved down from Jersey and didn't get over the sting of the transfer until my sisters and Mom saw Elvis at the Coliseum and my brother, Dad and I scored ND tix at UNC.

Union Co., not too far below you guys.
Many of the same experiences though - Yankee Stadium, Cousin Brucie, etc.

Cousin Brucie! Man, that takes me back.

Radio was a huge part of my life back in the day.

The Scooter and Jerry Coleman calling Yankees games.

Jean Shepherd on WOR.

New Jersey Americans basketball broadcasts from the Teaneck Armory ...

Wow. ECU started off so strong and have looked hapless in the month since. And to lose to a UVA team that got demolished by Duke 31-3??? That's just bad...

On the positive side, at least I don't have to listen to all the Pirates fans at work anymore, they all seem to have disappeared.

Whipping Maryland put some life into Virginia, but there's still no explaining ECU's swoon.
