Brain freeze
I've always been a Michael Jordan fan, but he sure hasn't transferred his personal success to Hanesbrands or the Bobcats.
When you make $179,000 a year, it shouldn't be considered punitive to stay at that level rather than get a pay raise. As in: "We think you earned this great, big salary and we're offering the same amount for next year."
Greensboro might have the worst crime of any North Carolina city, but I don't know how Durham can be left out of the rankings.
Giving North Carolina an F for college affordability is only half the story. What students, or their parents, don't pay, taxpayers do. Affordability for them ought to be considered, too.
Plea to homeowners with lawn-watering systems that drench streets and sidewalks: Please shut them off on mornings like this. I'd rather not slip and fall on the layer of ice you're creating.

There are probably a number of scenarios for the "no raise for Mitch" posturing:
#1 This was an actual hint that he should start a job search, albeit slightly less humiliating and more humane than locking him out of his office.
This scenario is probably unlikely since it would entail a); good government b.) overcoming factional pride and acknowledging the health of the city is more important. Like was said above-highly unlikely.
#2 This is actually a fake "no-raise" to appease citizens using strategies employed and perfected by GCS for Grier: ie giving him a bigger raise in the future to compensate, or having a private slush fund set up with contributors like for instance- the G-Boro realty industry
#3 They actually told Mitch he was done but he played the "I know where the Simkins/EEOC Wray skeltons are buried and I'm sure there are people who would want to know" card, and he escaped with the "no-raise wrist slap. (this option is probably a corollary of #2)
# buying time until a position can be created in some G-Boro charitable foundation for Mitch-at the same pay, of course.
Like was said- the last three-much more likely.

49 "F"s and one passing grade calls the report writers into question more than the states.
I'm paying full in-state tuition for my daughter to attend NCSU and consider it a bargain.

Jeff,
I agree. Compare in-state tuition at a UNC system university to a private college.
Anonymous,
It could be the council doesn't plan to allow any city employee raises next year.
