The president should smoke if he wants

If Barack Obama feels the urge to puff on a cigarette in the White House, he ought to go ahead and light up.

The president-elect said yesterday he'll abide by the executive mansion's smoke-free policy.

Why should he? Beginning Jan. 20, the White House will be his residence for at least the next four years.

Don't Americans still have the right to smoke in their own homes?

This isn't a matter of law. The Clintons set the no-smoke policy in 1993. Obama can change it.

I'm not a smoker, but plenty of people are -- including our next president, at least occasionally. Maybe he finds it relieves stress.

If so, let him at it. He's going to have some tough days in the White House, and if a cigarette helps him get through them, no one should stop him.

He's the boss, for cryin' out loud.

So he shouldn't smoke on TV or when he visits an elementary school.

I'm willing to chip in a pack a day for the president elect, however, I must be "held harmless" for any health liability as a result i.e. Chemo, lung transplant, etc! I hear he likes Marlboro's maybe Obama would like to see the Marlboroman's "last" chest x-ray! Beau

Well, Barry doesn't want to start breaking campaign promises this early! He hasn't even been sworn into office just yet.

He made a deal with his wife that the only way she would support his candidacy is if he quit smoking, so I'm sure that's more of what will drive him to not smoke in the White House instead of a silly Clinton mandate.

Not that I really care, though, I'm just going to sit back and watch his supporters grow uneasy because it's highly unlikely that he'll be able to see many of his other campaign promises through.

So she'll be proud of him only if he quits smoking?

What's between them is their business, but I don't care if he keeps his no-smoking promise or not.

Dave said:

No he should not smoke.

He has kids.
Why poison them.

A stretch but thats why public buildings don't allow it

Given this, it won't change my political support for
him one way or another.

As an ex smoker ( like a reformed drunk ) I'm
amazed he can turn it off and on. I never could
handle that

Doug, I don't think you realize that you are on a very slippery slope here. Saying people should smoke if they want is NOT p.c. behavior.
First JR ruining the enviornment, (the N&R reportedly not degrading in the soil like it supposedly did previously -see JR blog) now you saying about the smoking. What will we see next, the N&R printing a retraction for the David Wray articles? What gives at the N&R?

Clinton set another record in the White House,,,,,,remember.......Monia!!!!!!!

Frankly, We know the help at the White House sneak out for a smoke just like all workers do...I can see President Obama out in the back parking lot behind a Dumpest with the head Cook of the White House sharing a drag with each other......

Those dang smoke Nazi's have got their hand full on this one........

Well, apparently that's how she rolls. I mean, if the United States has gone this far to be in her good graces, certainly Barry can kick the habit.

And maybe if he does go ahead and lights up he can influence children to start smoking again.
"Well if the president does it so can I."
Wouldn't that be a great role model for the POTUS?
Doug, you must have been smoking acid before you wrote this. Or either you're out of your ghord.

Come on, what if he wants to slug down a couple of Buds after work? That's another bad example, but the guy's human. Don't be a nag.
