DA says he'll seek death penalty against Isaam Chaplin
Guilford County DA Doug Henderson plans to seek the death penalty against Isaam Mattay Chaplin, charged last week in the Dec. 15 murder of Brink's employee Juan Estaban Solado at Friendly Center.
"It is going to be a capital prosecution," Henderson told me today.
The state must give formal notice of its intention at what's known as a Rule 24 hearing.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Attorney's Office is in discussion with Henderson about possible federal prosecution of Christopher O'Neal Patterson, one of the two suspects in last week's armed bank robbery and subsequent chase and shootout with police.
Greensboro Police Officer Matt O'Hal was hit by the suspects' car and shot and wounded.
Patterson was shot and hospitalized, while Demarkchrisy Eddie Majors was shot and later died.
Patterson could face federal prosecution on charges of bank robbery and firearm possession by a convicted felon, Henderson said.
The state then could follow federal action with its own prosecution. Attempted murder of a law-enforcement officer could be one charge, the DA said.
Under the "acting in concert" theory, it would not be necessary to prove that Patterson rather than Majors actually fired the shot that hit O'Hal.
Police said they believe Patterson was driving the getaway car.
But, if he was driving when O'Hal was hit by the car, that fact could support an assault or attempted murder charge.
The prosecution of these cases will be very important.

WOW!!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW BLIND THE MEDIA AND POLICE ARE TO THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE THE WRONG PERSON FOR THIS CRIME? THE VIDEO THAT WAS SHOWN SEVERAL TIMES ON THE NEWS WAS A MORE SLENDER PERSON, MAYBE WEIGHTING 180 POUNDS THE MOST.. THE MAN THAT'S BEEN FRAMED, ISAAM MATAAY CHAPLIN IS A LOT MORE HEAVY WEIGHTING 240 POUNDS. HOW I KNOW, ME AND OVER 50 PEOPLE WHICH ATTEND A&T AND OFF THE CAMPUS PERSONALLY KNOWS THIS MAN! HE WOULD NEVER COMMIT SUCH A CRIME,HE'S IS A LOVING AND KIND INDIVIDUAL THAT WOULDN'T HURT ANYONE! WE TRIED TO SEE HIM. HE COULDN'T HAVE ANY VISITORS FROM DAY ONE. HE HAS NOT HAD A CHANCE TO GET A LAWYER. NOW TODAY I HEAR THEY'RE TRYING TO PUSH THE DEATH PENALTY? WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO? EVERYONE DESERVES A FAIR TRIAL! WHY HE WASN'T? SOUNDS VERY SUSPICIOUS TO ME. THERE WAS ANOTHER CRIME COMMITTED IN RANDOLPH COUNTY ON FEB.11TH (JUST 2 DAYS AFTER ISAAM WAS OBTAINED ON FEB 9Th) I BET ANYTHING IT WAS THE REAL KILLER FROM OLD NAVY AND THIS TIME HE BROUGHT HIS TWO FRIENDS ALONG. IT WOULD'VE BEEN A GREAT DECOY DON'T YOU THINK, WHILE EVERYONE THINKS THEY HAVE THE RIGHT SUSPECT? ISAAM MATAAY CHAPLIN DOESN'T NEED THE DEATH PENALTY, WHAT HE NEEDS IS A LAWYER AND A FAIR TRIAL... A LOT OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE VERY AND EXTREMELY DEVASTATED! DON'T GET ME WRONG THE PERSON THAT REALLY DID COMMIT THIS CRIME MUST PAY WITHOUT A DOUBT AND I HOPE THAT MONSTER IS FOUND SOON! BUT THE MAN THAT IS BEING HELD.. ISAAM MATAAY CHAPLIN IS NOT THIS MONSTER THAT COMMITTED THIS HEARTLESS CALLOUS CRIME.

That's a serious issue and a reminder that Chaplin must be regarded as a suspect, not a murderer until he's convicted in a court of law.
In a capital case, he is guaranteed the representation of at least two lawyers. The state will have to present a strong case to win a conviction and death sentence.
It could take a couple of years for the case to come to trial. If there's a conviction and death sentence, there's an automatic appeal to the N.C. Supreme Court. We're talking about a process of many, many years altogether.

I hold much more faith in law enforcement. If they did not have something concrete to go on, I'm SURE they would not have arrested this guy on a possible murder charge - and already have the D.A. come out with an announcement seeking the death penalty.
I'm also quite certain this guy has been afforded the opportunity to speak with at least one attorney - if he hasn't, he'd already have been set free.
Some of the nicest, loving people have committed heinous and senseless crimes....don't be so naive.

Sure, police get it right most of the time.
But it's a well-established fact that they don't get it right every time. No one does.
The presumption of innocence is also a fundamental principle of our system of justice.
Frankly, I was very surprised to read Mitchell Johnson's statement by email to the GreensboroPolitics blog last week about the police:
"They also apprehended the guy who murdered the Brinks guard at Old Navy before Christmas and that was great police work."

As the city's top professional employee, he should know better than to make a public statement presuming the guilt of a suspect in a major crime.

I agree, Doug. This is different than the two bank robbers that were essentially caught red-handed fleeing and ultimately attacked the police officers.
I do not know if Isaam is guilty or innocent, and the ONE point I agree with that was raised by justicepls is the murderer's size. Isaam does look substantially larger than the wigged felon caught on camera, but then again, he could've been putting weight on specifically to seek that notable difference if he was ever caught.
I do know that he has already been provided access to an attorney, and he will receive a fair trial in the fashion that Doug previously mentioned. If he is guilty of this crime, I certainly do hope that he receives the death penalty.

This is the worst thing that I've ever heard. I've know Chap for a while and when I heard the news that he was the person that was accused for that murder that took place at Friendly I was shocked. I know in my heart that he is not that type of person that would do something like that to ANYONE!! Yes, my heart goes out to the Juan family. I think that no one should loose there life period. The near fact that it was his day off was bad enough. But for those who know Chap and the kind of person he is, keep him and his family in prayer. It's very hard to deal with this when you know first had how funny and upbeat Chap is. Hopefully justice will be found in this case and the real person behind this will come foward; because it's not fair to loose two people and the person behind all of it is walking in the steets.

Do any of Chaplin's friends know how or why he was identified as the suspect? Do they know if he has an alibi for the time of the murder?
Frankly, his lack of a criminal record surprised me. This doesn't seem like the sort of crime one commits the first time out.
Yet, the report about Chaplin's palm prints being found on cars at Friendly Center after witnesses reported seeing the gunman touch those cars sounds like very strong evidence.
Also critical is other physical evidence -- the clothing, wig, gun, car used in the crime, and the money and anything else taken. Would police make and arrest and the DA talk about a capital prosecution if there is not a lot of such evidence at hand?
We will see in due time.

Folks get all upset with the word death sentence. Use possible death sentence which will cost taxpayers more than just life in a Federal Pen. Our district US Attorney needs to figure out is robbing a bank or murdering a Brinks employee under the same federal statute? I sure would like these alleged crimes to be federal just to share the burden of cost for the next 60 +years for healthcare, food and shelter.

It is so sad to see many of the A&T students and friends of Isaam defend him just b/c they Dont "think" he would do anything like this...stop being so naive...many of the people (his friends) defending him KNOW he is guilty, but just want to see their friend free b/c he is their Friend. That is such a selfish act especially since there was an innocent life taken. I know that God will bring justice in this case b/c the man was just doing his job, no one deserves their life to be taken away b/c of someones selfishness. I just hope that the truth comes out & he gets convicted and Justice is served...

A FAIR trial is in demand! And I feel there should be more evidence other than a survalence camera picture that does not resemble the person of interest. I feel the public deserves more than this in regards to Isaam Chaplin's freedom. And as I said before a fair trial is in demand.

Remember they also have fingerprints of the person charged on cars the witnesses say he touched as he was running to his car. . .a Fair trial will be given..& Justice will be served to the victims family.

I highly doubt that they would pick him up on campus, and detain him without strong evidence that linked him to the crime. They obviously have proof (palm prints) that Chaplin was at the scene of the crime.. The question is- what was he doing there?
Not every criminal looks or acts like a monster; the "normal" people (classmates, neighbor’s friends of friends) are the ones that we should fear the most. Someone knows something, and the truth will come out soon..people make decisions in life, and they have to deal with the consequences. Yes, he remains innocent until proven guilty..but let’s be realistic here, we can’t be naive and say, that because he was a “nice guy”, that he was in no way capable of being the mastermind and murderer in this case.

Yeah they "say" they have finger prints. But even if they do, I mean he did work at the Old Navy. Thats not that coincidental to find a match like that when most of the cars they checked for finger prints where coworkers cars

I wish all of you who do not know Chap, accusing him of murder would to kill it! He is innocent and I am personally seeking legal assistance for him! He IS not guilty of this murder...I do know that! I wish people would come forward and testify on his behalf instead of sitting quiet! He will get justice!!

He did NOT work at that Old navy at the time of the crime...so like the person stated above w/ the finger prints and the evidence ,the question is what was he doing there at the time ? & the car just so happens to link with the car said to be in the crime hmmmm coincedence? I think NOT. NO one is accusing him yet but evidence along with people and word of mouth is going to provide the victims family( the Brinks Worker) Justice. People in greensboro & surrounding areas are getting tired of the senseless & SELFISH crimes ...

I have a question for someone who is willing to answer? if the finger was being pointed at Chapp the whole time as a person of intrest, what took so long to find him? If all along you were looing for him, you could pull his record and she is residence and go from there. I think that GPD did a horrible job getting him if it is said to be him. I've known Chapp for some time now and I have a feeling that the DA might need to do a little more research on the person. Chapp is a pretty tall and built guy and the whole time it was said that the person was 5'10. Chapp stands at 6'3-6'4. that is a huge difference in my opinion. and even by size. yes, people can get and get their weight up so it can look like there where a different size from before, but once again for those who knew him, Chapp has been a built guy from when I met him back in 01'. but yes justice will be served. I'm no longer in the triad area but i would like to know the answer to the above..

wow! i sit here all the way in brooklyn not afraid to say i am a perosn who loved Juan salado I have to say a number of things based on the comments I have read let me begin by saying that the Salado family are a loving and service oriented family. They want Justice for the murder of thier Father, Brother, Son... and all of his frineds wish the same. We do not want the wrong person doing time or being murdered for taking Juan from his family. I am personally not for the death penalty. I do not belive an Eye for and Eye will do any justice in this case. As a matter of fact I would like for the person or persons who took Juans life to live and spend everyday in prison knowing what they or he has done He needs to look in the face of Juans son and expalin why his father will never attend a game graduation or simply a day at the pool or the movies. Juan was the only person who could reach out to my eldest son, he was close to all thre of my children and my daughter regrets going to the carribean for summer vacation as she missed our summer trip to charolette to spend time with her God mother, God brother and Juan who was a dear friend to many as i learned after his death. I also must say that i come from a place where we do not trust the police for many reasons but make no mistake DNA evidence goes a long way these days and if this young man has an alibi now is the time to step up we have not heard a thing in the media from a lawyer family member or his so called friends expalining why so much of this case points to him this implication that the surveliance camera does not look like him well depending on the angle and zoom of a camera you will get a precise body size you can get hair color complexion, clothing , accessories... unless the dumby looks into the camera and you get a facial description for body size you will have to ask the witnesses, further for this idea of him being peace loving and gentle he was picked up on your beloved A&T campus for being invovled in a conflict, was he not? does not seem so peacful to me! in reference to why the police did not go knocking on his door accoridng to the media he no longer worked for old navy prints and witnesses connected him to this crime and you do not know if all the police wanted to do was question him unitl his mouth wrote a check his ass could not cash I pray for this young man if he is not Juans murderer. I wonder what he was thinking if he is. did the murderer looked at Brinks weak pick up policy of sending one person into pick up cash and felt this would be the solution to their personal economic crisis? Maybe this first time crimminal did not intend to murder my juan but when the adrenalin started rushing through him or Juan recognized his face he knew he could not get away if he did not take juan's life? I ask you friends of mr Chaplin to pray for him and seek his justice if he is innocent but if he is not i hope he rots and i trust the justice system and the poeple of Greensborough do do what they have done so far try to help solve this crime. Your firend does not deserve to have his life ended his judegement will be at the end of his jounrey death is to easy a way out if he did this but lets respect what this family and community has lost in Juan salado and if he is innocent then find Juans murderer and find your friends alibi
