American terrorist
As we note in today's editorial, Eric Rudolph has pleaded guilty to four serial bombings that include the 1996 blast at the Atlanta Olympics.
Rudolph has defended his actions with a lame, if lengthy, 11-page, single-spaced diatribe against the government.
Rudolph is a disturbing reminder of domestic terror, whose gnarled roots stretch more than a century in this country's history, from lynchings to church bombings.
He tries to portray himself as a soldier in a holy war (sound familiar?) against abortion. He even compare his actions to U.S. troops' efforts in Iraq.
He writes:
"Tell me plastic people, are you not the ones waving the flag in support of the coward Bush's operation in Iraq? Do you not say that Washington's cause justifies the bombing and shooting of thousands of people?
"Answer me, is the causus belli of promoting democracy in the Middle East more weighty for waging war than the systematic murder of millions of your own citizens? After all, the unborn are citizens they not? (sic) Is not that the basis of your argument for a 'right to life' guaranteed in the Declaration of lndependence and embodied in the Bill of Rights?"
Rudolph is a killer of innocent people, plain and simple.
As our editorial notes, he is a coward. And, by any definition of the word, he is a terrorist.

Eric Rudolph may be a coward and most definitely is a terrorist of the worst kind --- an American born and bred domestic terrorist, but he sure out-smarted the authorities who were trying to get him early on. Remember?
This dude hid out in the rugged mountains of NC for years without authorities(particularly federal) being able to find him. Rudolph lived in those NC mountains for all those years without ever being located. The fact that he was able to do this amazes me. When the feds declined the navigating assistance of the locals, this amazed me even more.
Why would the federal authorities snub the locals who know the mountains better than anyone? Being able to navigate in such a place is a skill that no high tech contraption, years of book-learning or physical training can come close to matching. These feds were offered REAL help, but their stubborn pride wouldn't allow them to receive it.
The mountain locals were perceived as "ignorant hillbillies" who were not about to tell authorities how to conduct their search for this outlaw. The feds esteemed themselves as mighty and all-knowing, yet they couldn't find Eric Rudolph. Hmmmmmmm...
Now, don't get me wrong, OK? I'm not by any means glorifying Rudolph. What he did was heinous, diabolical, sinister and atrocious. But give this dude credit where credit is due. He out-witted law enforcement powers that pride themselves on being highly intelligent, tech savvy and prepared in every way. But who found Eric Rudolph? If my memory serves me correctly, a rookie local law enforcer found him.
Eric Rudolph is a most cowardly terrorist, but the man outwitted the feds. I give him a trite measure of respect for keeping himself hidden in the mountains for as long as he did, be him a cowardly terrorist or not.

T.M., thanks for your thoughts. I don't mean to sound shrill, but I have not one shred of respect for Rudolph.
In fact, I will give him no more credit than al-Qaida, which practices the same kind of cold-blooded extremism in the name of an alleged higher cause.
He wantonly killed other Americans. Also, some North Carolinians in the mountains may even have helped him (some definitely sympathized with him). If that's so, they deserve justice as well.

Unfortunately there were a few who saw Rudolph as some kind of a folk hero in eluding the Feds especially give the fact that the Feds had done some right dumb things in attempts to apprehend some other folks. Those same folks would give the "devil" aid if the government was somehow involved in chasing him.
We had our share of arrogant Fed's in this area early on and some of those same folks, early on gave those ignorant "city boys" a run through the mountains just so they could teach them some humility. Eventually there were a handful of Fed's who attempted to work with the locals in the area and did receive and appreciate the help.
Those same folks who once thought Rudolph some kind of folks hero are now scared to go hunting (or shinin or weed gardenin) for fear that he just might not have told the ATF boys where he stached all his explosives.
For the most part 99.99% of us are just glad he is caught and that is finally being brought to trail. That same number consider him to be the lowest of the low and and can not see that he deserves any mercy. Out of that number many would just soon they took him out and hung him from the nearest tree, a few would just as soon the young deputy had just shot him and saved the money of trials and appeals. They figure there is no appeal from hell.
Now that comes from somebody living here in these mountains where he ran free for so long and not some flatlander with a hearsay opinion.
