Dudley rededicated

I was one of the hundreds who packed Dudley High School's gymnasium Saturday afternoon for the dedication of the school's expanded and renovated campus.

My alma mater never looked so good.

Also impressive was the warm community reception for the school, which once educated any youngster who grew up black in Greensboro. Alumni from as far away as California came to see the new campus and to rekindle old memories.

One of the nicest features of the campus is that now both sides of the building are designed like front entrances. Whether you approach Dudley from Willow Road or Lincoln Street, it puts its best face forward.

Also encouraging was one speaker after another's acknowledgment that the physical building should be only the beginning. Dudley's state-of-the-art facilities will mean little without state-of-the-art learning inside.

That's where another type of dedication comes in: Greensboro's.

Don't you mean the parents and students at Dudley? I live in Greensboro and have two kids who don't attend Dudley. Shouldn't my dedication been extended to my kids' school?
I mean come on Allen! Dudley has been renovated into a beautiful showplace that everyone should be proud of. That should motivate the students and parents of Dudley to put forth their best effort. Yet, it appears from your statement that you expect the citizens of Greensboro to dedicate ourselves, regardless of our affiliation to Dudley, to making certain the academics inside Dudley improve. I don't get it! Why does Greensboro have to be dedicated to state of the art learning at Dudley? It is my hope that the parents and students of Dudley be appreciative enough of the state of the art facility that they would want to put forth the effort to dedicate themselves to state of the art learning.

Citizens should take greater ownership of all of our schools. We all have an important stake in them.

I PERSONALLY WOULD HAVE LIKE TO HAD THE SCHOOL BRAND NEW AND NOT RENOVATED.

I must say Dudley looks a lot better than it did when I was a student there '70-'74. I hope a new, brighter life comes with the new look.

As a Dudley alumni of '03, I must admit that I'm very proud that the new facility looks amazing. I know many people held controversial issues against the renovation of this building, but just think of the generations to come. Dudley has a lot of history in Greensboro's community, and I agree with Allen that as a community we should be dedicated to its up-keep. It doesn't matter if the parents/students do not directly belong to Dudley, we should all be grateful. For a long time, Grimsley was the only high school that continously received funds to improve the facility, now it is Dudley's time to shine! I just pray that the incoming students are appreciative of the building and keep it in good conditions.

Also, I feel that it would be beneficial for there to be an increase in the parent involvement through the PTA, especially at Dudley.
