Jinxed Crayton's taxing occupation

Guilford County Tax Director Jenks Crayton's extended perch in the county commissioners' hot seat reminds me of another job I'd never want to have.

You could not pay me enough money to be a department head in county government.

It's impossible to untangle the morass of he-saids and she-saids in this case -- from the yanking of Child Support Office supervision from Crayton (despite its stellar performance on his watch) to charges that he's playing favorites on commissioners' tax valuations.

But it's easy to see that county government is no place for the faint of heart.

Rub a commissioner's ego the wrong way and you're dead meat.

Make the Republicans think you're siding with the Democrats and you're dead meat.

Make the Democrats think you're siding with the Republicans and you're dead meat.

Make tough personnel calls on the wrong employees and you're dead meat.

If the personalities don't get you, the politics will.

Update: In a bizarre, contentious meeting, the commissioners voted along party lines Thursday night to place Crayton on paid leave and to order a state audit of the tax department.

As I said in another post Allan this situation has been going on to what seems to me as forever. It seems the commissioners have been after this guys hide for years and just don't seem to understand that the man is doing a great job from what I remember and from what I am reading. Seems as if many of the commissioners would rather have their own person in the office so they could do thier control thing. Guess this one just doesn't cave in like they would like for him too.
They took away the most efficiently operated Child Support Office in the state from this man just because they couldn't get to him any other way.
I was reading over on John's blog and it seems that the commissioners don't really have anything so they have to hid and see what they can make up. The same thing goes on up here in the mountains(Buncombe Co.) That is the typical way of doing business when you can not honestly speak out against the person you are seeking to degrade or unseat or what have you. This is one subject that the N&R needs to dig into and I mean deep digging. Hound the commissioners who are seeking to hide behind close doors until they "bleed".
From what I read and see, it's dirty politics pure and simple. Time to put an end to secret meetings in city government.

I watched this meeting in absolute HORROR on channel 13. Trudy Wade and Billy Yow are the only 2 county commissioners who have ANY sense of how people think. Neither represent my district, but I'm darn glad they are "out there" representing how I think. I wish they would do an audit on Skip Alston's finances along with his buddy Davis. People who live in glass houses should NOT throw stones. This guy with the tax department should be rewarded, instead he is being "someone's" jesus. Its just not right.

Thanks for writing, Lilly.
We can't say for certain if there's any validity to the charges leveled at Crayton.
But there's absolutely no doubt that the manner in which this whole affair has been handled is clumsy, petty and malicious.
I have rarely agreed with Billy Yow, but he made some valid points last night.

True, we cant say for certain if there is validity to the charges leveled, but we can say for certainty alot of our tax money disappeared while in Skip Alston's "management company". Why isnt everyone up in arms about that? This tax man was doing a great job, leading, training staff, overseeing and collecting money for the kids of deadbeat parents, and otherwise doing his job. Billy Yow sometimes comes across the wrong way, but if you really listen to him, he has alot of good points. The only points I saw last night were on Davis and Gibson's heads.. haha..

This event and the News & Record's opening up the process of news via blogging and personal reporting may eventually shed to much needed light on the doings of all.

However, as I read today, the results of the State Auditor will determine who deserves the public's distain.

When the State Auditor clears the tax director, Mr. Arnold, and Mr. Yow; I hope he or she keeps right on digging until things are discovered on Mr. Alston and Mr. Davis.

I sincerely hope the allegations made by Mr. Yow about Mr. Davis' business practices are also investigated.

Allen,

I have strong opinions on this topic and may post comments or submit a piece for publication on it.

But I'm not sure that I can write anything stronger or more worthwhile than what Lonnie D. Groendes wrote.

Would it be possible to post "Partisan politics infects commissioners"?

I'm basing this purely on what Groendes wrote, but my first impression is that he is may deserve extreme praise for what he wrote.

Not many people would be brave enough to write what he wrote, but it is the one ingredient that has been missing: strong individual endorsement of Jenks Crayton by someone who has worked with him directly.

Republican members of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners have behaved just as inexcusably before as the Democrats appear to be behaving now, so Republican County Commissioners have no moral high ground on which to stand and criticize.

But in this particular case, it is looking increasingly like the Democrats have gone out on a limb that is soon going to crash in an ugly way.

And though I am much more inclined to vote for Democrats, I will not be sorry to see any current Democratic County Commissioner fall. Each of them will have earned any fall that he or she takes.

Out of all the bad County Commissioners that Guilford County has had since at least 1990 (literally almost every single one of them during that period, without any exaggeration, and equally from both parties), only one or two have ever suffered in any noticeable way for ugliness, pettiness, improprieties, mistreatment of others, political game-playing, and any of the other infinite sins that have been committed in the name of self and party.

I wonder if, at 32 years of age, I will live to see a decent collection of human beings serving graciously and decently as County Commissioners.

I'm not counting on it, regardless of how long I ultimately live.

Out of curiosity, prior to 1990, has the County Commissioners ever had a majority of members who interacted and represented in a way that our county's citizens could be proud of?

Have such conditions ever existed?

How and why did the County Commissioners become a government body serving as a magnet for the worst representation our county could hope to have?

I actually ended up forming a post here, beyond what I intended; I may yet compose a letter to submit too.

If you're able to post the piece by Groendes, I think I would not be alone in appreciating that.

If not, I thank you for making it available in print. It was an important piece for you to print, and it was an important piece for people to have an opportunity to read.

Sincerely,

Hardy

Allen Johnson said:

Hardy, thanks for your thoughts. You're right; even by the commissioners' standards, this is a nadir in sniping and conniving.
Also, I'll put the Groendes piece on this blog later today. I should have thought of that.
