Ghosts in the machine

My home computer has turned against me.

For reasons I can't figure out, it has decided to shut down when it wants to, not when I want it to.

Right now it wants to shut down after a minute or so, forcing me to type and save furiously in hopes of beating the clock.

Making matters worse, it sometimes refuses to sign back on.

So I've loaded my IBM Netvista into the trunk of my car and am taking it to the comouter hospital after work.

Who knows if and when it will be coming home.

In the meantime, I am helpless, unable to shop, pay bills, send emails, rent movies on Netflix, check the latest news on my beloved Green Bay Packers or tend my blog from the comfort of my home office.

I have become so dependent on my PC that not having it feels like suffering with a broken-down car or losing cable reception during hoops season.

I know the feeling. I find myself putting off the process of taking care of minor items and malfunctions to avoid downtime. Better to wait for a bona fide train wreck.

Joe, here's the most embarrassing part: Took the darned thing to CompUSA and while it's sitting on the service counter I notice the fan vents are caked with dust. Just before shelling out 99 bucks for a diagnostic. "See ya," I tell the service guy. I'm betting plain old dust is the problem, not Spyware or some other cyber-gremlin. Going home to hook it up now. If another post appears from me tonight, I was right. If not, back to the service counter.

Allen, open the cover, vacuum the whole thing out.

I own a laptop. Greatest part? You can pop the hard drive out and put it into a similar machine when yours needs fixing.

Hardest part? Finding the similar machine.

Had a similar situation with my pc. I made the mistake of running a circular saw indoors. Don't ask. Never got it to work right after that. Hope you have better luck.
