I'm watching Steven A. Smith on ESPN's coverage of the NBA Draft. He's getting his own show on the cable network.
I remember when he was a young reporter for the News & Record. You know, one of those minority hires in which the News & Record compromised its journalistic standards.

You mean me? I'm still here. I'm happy when anyone makes it- but it highlights one ofthe problems with affirmative action. The N&R deserves credit for hiring him, but shouldn't it be because he was good, and not because he was good AND black? Maybe he should get the credit, not affirmative action. Then again, maybe not. That's the problem. It's the same thing with Clarence Thomas. A common line was "he wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for affirmative action." Hmmm, maybe it had something to do with making very good grades and getting into Yale based on those grades alone, and nothing to do with affirmative action.
But as I've stated before, as long as the qualifications and standards are the same for everyone, I generally don't have a problem with affirmative action. It's when you change the standards to accomodate people that stigma begins to attach. And yes, Allen, I feel the same way about legacies and sports scholarships. If you don't have the grades, you shouldn't be there.
