Sun-Times is taking heat, too
We're not the only newspaper in the hot seat because of a controversial content decision.
The Chicago Sun-Times has decided to trim its daily printed stock market report from nine pages to a two-page summary. Many readers are outraged.
The full tables still will be offered online.
"We are putting our resources to work where they will do the reader the most good," the Sun-Times' business editor, Dan Miller, said. "Sun times.com/markets offers readers a chance to track and research stocks that would be impossible in the published Sun-Times."
Miller also has said the Sun-Times could do much more with those nine pages to serve its readers through other news content.
The reader response, Miller later admitted in an NPR interview, has been blistering.
From comics to commentarty, newspapers have to change to survive. We do our best, but not all of our calls will be the right ones. Yet doing nothing in this challenging era for newspapers is not an option. And because the most loyal readers have such strong bonds with their newspapers, nearly any change, large or small, will be met with opposition.
Honestly, I still could be running letters today about the cancelation of the "Mark Trail" comic strip (not that I want to stir that up again).

Even beyond race, ethnicity, political persuasions, and the usually targeted categories of grouping, it is staggering to sit back and ponder all the diversity surrounding us.
You can take something as "simple" as a newspaper, break it down into its many parts, and probably be amazed at how many other people are passionate about the parts of the paper you could just as easily do without.
Each individual who ever picks up a newspaper has a special relationship with that paper.
The text may be uniform in every single edition of a paper, but the human interactions with that text are profoundly unique for every individual reader.
I don't envy the difficult decisions you must make about what to add, delete, and/or change.
Schools face very much the same pressures to create a better product, and that pressure leads in many directions, both good and bad.
"Change" is one of life's greatest realities, but even in its simplest, seemingly most innocuous forms, it is one of the most difficult for us to accept.
That is true, even when a change might ultimately be for the best.

Just a low-intensity, tangential comment about a word I don't like, in news reports - "admitted".
To me "admitted" carries the connotation of one-down-ness, such that the other side scores a point, instead of the image that typically? often? should be presented, namely of a reasonable person who's being open with the reporter, who's a civilized rational person of good judgement and not a bombastic extremist.
(that was an extremist distinction, but I hope the point gets through nonetheless)
Is it just me, or is this what "admitted" means to other people too? If so, a different term (connotation described above) would be preferable, but is there a concise way of presenting that other connotation?
You don't have to answer, I'm just ruminating, but it has bugged me for years.

Good point, Anna. One of the troubling turns in journalism (albeit this is a blog where opinion is OK even if it's not disclaimered) is the constant inclusion of non-factual innuendo that colors stories (what used to be called "news"). We're constantly given stories that include the writer's POV instead of the news. Small words, like "admitted," carry huge weight.
It'd be interesting to look at "news" and redact opinion-ese or substitute plain ole verbs (like "said") and see what we'd get.
