Digital dismay

And so it has come to this: A 15-year-old is stabbed to death in Brooklyn on Independence Day because he won't surrender his iPod.

A group of youths run the boy down and surrounded him in pursuit of his music player.

Two Brooklyn teens later were arrested in the homicide and New York City police report 50 iPod thefts so far this year, nearly all on city subways.

For all our technological advances ... well, you know.

As I said somewhere else a while ago, don't blame technology. Blame the murderers. An iPod today, sneakers yesterday. It'll always be something that someone else doesn't have. But it's always murder.

I can think of at least 2 of the 10 commandments that were broken. Then again, these kids probably don't even know what the commandments are.

One of the reasons people are getting "jacked" for iPods is that they are so visable. I read an article that had a police expert suggest that owners of iPods stop wearing the tell-tale white headphones and cords. This is what the thieves are looking for in their search. Buy some black corded headphones and they think you have an ordinary player.

Sue beat me to my thought... I recall that folks were murdered a short while ago for their Starter jackets.

Truth: Do you really think that knowing the 10 c's would have made a difference to those thugs up in NYC? Any more than it made a difference to the lynchers in Alabama and Mizzippi who recited them every day, for instance? Just wondering.

Sigh.

What? Did I say something wrong AGAIN?? Darn...

govtwriter said:

No, I was sighing at the whole situation. People killing people over shoes and jackets and iPods.

Also, I just go an iPod and I was thinking, DA** now I can't even use my great gift for fear of someone knocking me in my head over it on the metro?

Eric said:

Luckily, we have no metro here in Greensboro. But if I was going to use an iPod (I don't have one), I rather think I'd use it in places other than the mall or similar places.

Anyway, the white earbuds suck. I'd have to use different phones that clip to my ears.

But I agree that today's society, at least the part that makes such a big deal over fad participation that some unstable creeps will kill rather than buy, is in a sad state.
