For the record
In a comment today on the letters to the editor blog, my good friend Roch has taken issue with a letter writer, David Austin.
In an example of what Roch considers a kink in our fact-checking process, Roch suggests that Austin misrepresented himself as a Democrat in his letter criticizing Democratic county commissioners Bruce Davis and Skip Alston.
So today I phoned Mr. Austin, who chuckled that his party registration had been called into question publicly and who assured me he is a Democrat.
He's right. He is registered in Guilford County under the name Martin David Austin. You can look it up.
As for the greater question on fact-checking, we would not take the time to check writers' party affiliation. We take them at their word on that.
We expect most writers who used their names on letters to tell the truth about such basics. We verify their identities and their addresses, but we don't go snooping as to whether they are misrepresenting themselves (unless they give us a reason to be suspicious).
For that matter, I didn't have our tech people check Roch's comment to verify it was really him.
Nor, the last time I checked, do our news reporters typically ask for drivers' licenses or passports when conducting person-in-the-street interviews.
That would be impractical. There are boundaries created by time, resources and common sense.
Of course, we could reorder our priorities and pick every nit in every letter. And we would never get a daily newspaper out.

The other day, I posted a URL that debunked a writer's "quotation" from which he built an entire illegitimate argument. (I think Ed did that with one of the columnists a while back.)
Should we expect the N&R to verify something like a written or cited quotation prior to accepting a letter to print?

Whoa! Hold on a second, Allen. I didn't "take issue with a letter writer, David Austin." I never even got around to the substance of Mr. Austin's letter (with which I happen to largely agree).
I was careful NOT to say that Mr. Austin had "misrepresented" himself. I was using the fact there is no registered Democrat under the name of David Austin in Guilford County to make a point about lack of fact-checking of letters to the editor. I apologize to Mr. Austin if, in trying to make that point, I appeared to bring his truthfulness in question. My intention was to critique the N&R's letters policy, not to disparage Mr. Austin, and again, I apologize if it appeared that way.

I think some are looking at the Letters and other blogs through a very narrow lens.
Letters, and most blogs, are usually opinions or feelings of the writer. Often they cite sources that led them to their beliefs, but I never take them as either facts or news, in the strictest sense of the term.
Search for any current events issue and you'll find ample "facts" to support almost any position or interpretation.
News is one thing, opinions are quite another.

Sorry for the tardiness of this reply, Roch.
But your comments strongly implied that the News & Record had not checked this man's registration, therefore it was not aware that he was not a registered Democrat.
How else could you interpret that?
Again, we assume a modicum of honesty in signed letters. If a person says he is a Democrat, we take his word on that. If he writes in his letter that he is a college student, we don't contact the school's registrar to verify that.
And again, if a letter for some reason raises our suspicions, we will check such things.

Allen,
Was there any type of "fact checking" that went on before Ciara Lilly's letter was published? Did anybody try to get the teacher's side?
I notice that there is a General(?) of some sort that has asked Jennifer at the Chalkboard many times to get the other side of that story. To him Ciara's story seems slanderous and I can't say that I disagree.

The dictionary defines "rote" as "A memorizing process using routine or repetition, often without full attention or comprehension."
It is not clear to me in light of this word definition what exactly a "rote fact" would be. What does the combination of these two words mean? How does that relate to Ciara Lilly's story?
I would agree that her story was based upon her perceptions of her experiences, or more accurately, it was a reflection of the paradigms that she had about Southwest and the people there before she entered school there.
Dr. Stephen Covey says that a "paradigm is generally defined as the way that we see the world through our perceptions, understanding and interpreting. Paradigms are like maps and each of us have many, many maps in our head, and they can be divided into two main categories: the way things are, or realities, and maps of the way that things should be, or values. We interpret everything we experience through these mental maps."
Dr. Covey also said, "Our paradigms will affect how we interact with others, which in turn will affect how they interact with us". Perhaps, Ms. Lilly's paradigms and those students at Southwest's paradigms were very different, and a shifting of paradigms of both was needed before an effective relationship could develop. Unfortunately, it appears that a paradigm shift never happened for either.
