Good Night and Good Luck

Folks round here didn't want to name the new Northern High School for legendary newsman Edward R. Murrow, who was born in Guilford County.

Some said they didn't even know who the man was.

Maybe Hollywood will help. George Clooney is director and co-writer of a new independent movie, "Good Night and Good Luck." The black-and-white film stars David Strathairn as Murrow, who not only was an intrepid war correspondent, but who also dared defy Joseph McCarthy during the heyday of the Red Scare.

Patricia Clarkson and Robert Downey Jr. also star.

The movie theoretically debuts on Oct. 7. That's because it typically takes forever for such releases to make it to Greensboro.

Sounds like a great idea to me. Especially after our city fathers insulted Mr. Murrow by naming a dead end street after him.

I never did get the push to name the new high school after Murrow. It would not have made much sense sitting between NW and NE.

Strathairn is an inspired choice to play Murrow, given his physical resemblence and his typically thoughtful performances.

It's extremely saddening to see that Murrow's been largely forgotten in Greensboro.

His reports during the London Blitz brought the absolute desperation of those that were almost bombed into submission to an international audience of millions...and brought his own humility into the issue as well. He continued to decry the acts of war that created this, and hated to see that the "just consequences of war" created death and despair on every side. That in and of itself endeared me to the man as I grew towards maturity in Greensboro.

I've grown up here, and visited the GHM more times than I'd like to count. However, I remember that as a kid I was more impressed with unexploded grenades and fake currency than the fact that someone from Greensboro was a true patriot.

Someone that has seen and subsequently stood up towards the horrors of war and the eventual aftereffects...that is a patriot. Someone that will actively work against megalomaniacs that pander towards fears in order to create fear and personal power...THAT is a patriot.

Murrow was a true patriot, and his (up to now) largely unknown work during McCarthyism to protect the civil liberties of the common US citizen should definitely be highlighted.

While it took Joseph Welch to finally put down the issue of McCarthyism through three simple statements towards McCarthy during the Senate Hearings of 1954:

"Let us not assassinate this lad further, senator. You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?"

...it was Murrow that continually pushed towards the truth and brought this issue to a standstill that oh so desperately needed Congressional Hearings.

I have an inordinate amount of respect for George Clooney for pushing this project through, and I can't imagine a better cause for a true US Citizen to work towards than to uncover hypocracy and corruption, and as such this film is timeless in its pursuit.

"Good night, and good luck" is an apt description of this man and his legacy. He held humanity at its highest regard... and above all, he truly cared about (to steal a phrase from Thomas Paine) "The Rights of Man." And as such he refused to preclude any sense of a natural right from those that live under the United States Constitution.

That being said, I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. I just hope that we can see this movie during first-run in his actual hometown.

If not, I'm saddened that our current theaters have no sense of community history, nor of the actual impact that a local resident has created upon our national identity.

PS: Yes, I know this late (re: postdate), but it still needed to be said.
