Please vote me off this "Island"

A movie I wouldn't recommend, "The Island," is a loud, glitzy pastiche of ideas we've seen before in films such as "Logan's Run" and "Coma."

It raises provocative questions about cloning, abortion, medical ethics, etc. Then it does nothing with them , devolving into a car chase movie and a big-screen product placement gallery for bottled water and a Cadillac concept car.

To add insult to injury I put too much seasoning on my popcorn. My tongue hurts.

Being a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000, I saw the trailer for "the Island" and recognized immediately what it was. It had every plot element from a movie they did while on the Sci Fi Channel, called "Parts: The Clonus Horror." There was no need to see a remake of a rotten movie like that.

Too bad you weren't as up-to-date on MST3k knowledge. It hekps every now and then. {;-)

Tonight my wife and I will be seeing "Junebug," which was the most sensational movie to debut at Sundance. Why this wistful tribute to rural North Carolina isn't playing in your state before NY and my LA is no mystery. Wherever you're from, once you're rooted in a big city you develop a yearning for deeper bonds, the kinds that survive lay-offs, cross-town moves and unrealized promises to get together (or more recently, to send an e-mail). Junebug, the LA Times and NY Times critics gush, is about family, but I'm sure it could have depicted close friendships if the jaded Hollywood types thought movie audiences still believed they exist outside of the Lord of the Rings fantasy. Over a decade ago, I spent one graduate semester at UNCG, and in that short time I found that in your region, the folks who like you really care. Because I once experienced Greensboro, tonight when I see Junebug I won't be dwelling on how superficial relationships are in LA in comparison to the movie's fictional characters. I expect to miss the frequent invitations to family dinners, group excursions to the park, chilling but hilarious ghost stories, and the simple pleasure caused by someone pouring dish soap into the campus fountain.

I ventured to the Palladium to see "The Devil's Rejects". The only thing that should be rejected is that movie. Awful can't even begin to describe it.

At the Palladium, you can butter your own popcorn. Yes, that means unlimited butter stuff. Unlimited is not always a good thing.

Yup, too much butter is like too much sugar ... awful.
While we're on the subject of gluttony at the Bijou, I've always smirked when informed that a tub of popcorn and a large drink come with unlimited refills.
Haven't taken them up on the offer yet. If they really expected large numbers of us to call their bluff, they'd give us a voucher for a free tub next time. And a drink. Thumbs down.
