This week's column

So smitten is the city of Charlotte with visions of a NASCAR Hall of Fame there that it held a parade last week to show its love.

They donned yellow shirts and marched and smiled while visiting NASCAR muckety-mucks mustered "Aw shucks, for us?" smiles.

Not everyone was impressed.

Groused one letter writer to The Charlotte Observer: "All the yahoos who lined the streets wearing yellow to impress the NASCAR committee just reinforced the stereotype of this part of the country as being only 'bout racin' and rasslin'."

But this guy clearly was the exception. Probably a foreigner, too. From New York.

People in Charlotte are drooling for NASCAR and they don't care if the whole world knows.

We don't do things like that in Greensboro. While Charlotte is a shamelessly rah-rah town full of deep-pocketed cheerleaders, we have our dignity in Greensboro.

You won't find us prancing around in yellow shirts rantin' about racin'. At least not in full view.

But we do have our own sports-themed civic jewel to dream about. A group of local boosters proposes a $23 million Atlantic Coast Conference Hall of Champions near the Greensboro Coliseum. And state lawmakers slipped a $2 million allocation into their new budget to "study" the idea.

Not to sound like I'm from Charlotte or anything, but the Hall of Champions is a brilliant concept.

The ACC was born near here in 1953.

Greensboro is home to the ACC headquarters and the coliseum and has hosted some of the most memorable ACC basketball tournaments in history. The city also remains roughly equidistant from one tip of the sprawling ACC to the other. And even as the ACC shops its tournaments to glitzier venues in bigger cities, home is where its heart is, and that's Greensboro.

Further, unlike the NASCAR Hall of Fame derby, Greensboro isn't competing with anyone for the ACC hall. For now. Charlotte is vying for NASCAR's hall with Richmond, Va., Daytona Beach, Fla., Atlanta and Kansas City, Kan.

But something about the idea doesn't quite fit right.

For starters, the $2 million state grant arguably should have gone to more pressing needs. Ironically, it equals the amount an ill-considered half-cent sales tax increase in Guilford County would raise for cash-strapped local schools, which cut teaching assistants last week to make ends meet.

Second, a more appropriate home for the hall is downtown, not near the coliseum (Charlotte's gotten that part right from the start with its NASCAR hall idea). How about the Bellemeade District near First Horizon Park?

Finally, the ACC has said it's OK with the concept and nothing more. "They've said all along that they didn't think they'd come forward with any actual money from the conference," Dick Grubar, chairman of the War Memorial Commission, said Friday.
So the funding will have to come from other sources, including corporate donors, the individual ACC schools, an annual dinner and rent from the Convention and Visitors Bureau, which would relocate to the building.

How to say this tactfully?

With the ACC's largesse of corporate partners, could it be all that difficult to write us a check?

Yes, NASCAR isn't paying anyone one red cent to host its Hall of Fame. Yes, the ACC headquarters stayed put even when then-Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot tried to woo it away in 1994.

Yes, the ACC Tournament has been played in Greensboro 20 times, more than any other city, and will be held here next year and in 2010.
But Greensboro has been good to the ACC as well. It has provided an excellent home for its women's tournament, where attendance continues to grow.

Nobody puts on a better men's tournament. That's a given. It is a big deal here. The biggest deal. It's merely something else to do in a place like D.C. or Atlanta.

Yet, for all those family ties, all the Hall of Champions has to show is the ACC's blessings. "I couldn't think of a better place to have it than here," ACC Commissioner John Swofford said in 2003.
And that's all he said.

C'mon, guys. You don't have to throw us a parade, but it'd be nice if you could march up to the plate with more to offer than just platitudes.

NASCAR has consistently given back to the fans and to the public. Can't say the same for the ACC. It seems all they want is to take, ie make money on top of money.
You spoke of corporate sponsors writing a check. How about Jefferson Pilot who's broadcasting sports network has made enough money televising ACC to build the building with no problem. Do you think it will happen? Don't hold your breath, Allen.

Of course, then we couldn't continue to 'try' to be like Charlotte.
