The letters blog and accountability

Effective on Monday, Sept. 26, the News & Record letters blog will require registration from readers who wish to post comments.

The process will be quick and simple. Using a tool called Typekey, It will require commenters to sign in once with an ID name. Once you've registered that name, no one else can use it.

This process should add greater accountability to the letters blog by 1)preventing one commenter from impersonating another (yes, some grown-ups actually go to the trouble to do this) and 2) allowing us to track delinquent commenters more quickly and effectively.

This is an interim step. A more sophisticated registration process in the works for later in the fall.

Some bloggers believe we should let peer pressure deal with the miscreants, who are commonly called "trolls" in the wild west of the blogosphere.

But we see the letters as a village green, a place for spirited but civil discussion. Come on in. Let us know what's on your mind. But please don't forget to respect one another. Or we'll politely ask you to leave.

I got accused of being a troll and I may be.
If I only knew what troll was.

Who has access to user ID information? Some of us work in sensitive or high profile positions where our personal opinions could jeapordize our livelyhoods.

Allen Johnson said:

Only the editorial staff; same as with printed letters to the editor. Your personal information won't be shared with anyone else.

Using TypeKey, News & Record will not have access to any personal information. The only thing News & Record will see is the email address you use to sign up for the service.

JayCee said:

I just did some research on TypeKey. Typical complaints are that registered users begin to receive spam in their email accounts soon after signing up. Also, TypeKey's Terms Of Service contains the following:
"... TypeKey Service may include advertisements...the service may include certain communications...such as service announcements and administrative messages...you will not be able to opt out of receiving them."
The TOS also includes this rather ominous statement:
"Cause for immediate termination without notice shall include...(b) requests by law enforcement or other government agencies"
I'm going to take a "wait and see" attitude and do some more research before I sign up for this.

I have been registered with TypeKey for some months and have never received a single communication from TypeKey or Six Apart, the parent company. I have not been aware of any spam from this service either.

just joe said:

Allen is likely sincere when he says your personal information won't be shared with anyone. But there should be a disclaimer there. If a state or federal agency requests your personal information through subpoena, you can darn well bet your personal information will be shared.

The SBI investigated me for remarks I made about the International Civil Rights Museum. They thought I was making threats when I wasn't. But it didn't take them long to track me down by my IP address.

Fortunately, my employer and the police were understanding and the issue was pretty much dropped.

So, in reality, your personal information is in some instances up for grabs.

Allen Johnson said:

That is true, and it is clearly spelled out in our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, which each commenter is asked to read and consent to before making posts.
That policy in part states:

"We will not disclose any information without your advance permission except when we believe the law requires us to do so or if the disclosure is necessary to protect the property or the rights of the News & Record."

These should be very rare instances, I'd expect. As for those civil rights museum comments you made, what in the world were you thinking?

FreeBird said:

I'm sure that there are a few bad apples in the bunch spoiling the FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION we have all enjoyed these past few months causing the N&R to develop more controls. IMO, this is yet another erosion of the first ammendment...We can speak as long as we are registered... This FreeBird is flying to another forum where my anonymity and ideas are valued.

Allen Johnson said:

We're sorry to lose you, FreeBird, but we believe we have a responsibility to keep this forum as civil and constructive as we can.

just joe said:

The truth is that I wasn't really thinking, Allen. I was responding out of frustration for the inadequacies of the leadership involved in preserving and opening the museum.

What I said was not meant to be taken literally but to draw attention to the absurdity of the decisions that have been made by Alston and others.

When I read my statements later, I could definitely see where someone would feel offended and angry about my comments. That's one of the problems with technology. Once you say something stupid, it's impossible to take it back.

It's hard for me to imagine that anyone really felt threatened, but I must concede that it is possible with all the nut jobs in the world today.

I am glad for the TypeKey service. I think it is a good step to take-not too restrictive but restrictive enough to hopefully clean up some of the trolling done here.

While I don't always agree with your opinions (or anybody else's for that matter), I appreciate the job you do and realize that it is just that.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to explain myself.

Allen Johnson said:

Sure, Joe. Thanks for your candor.

Astro Boy said:

OK, I just signed up for the Typekey. So, now I don't do anything different, just continue to comment as usual and somehow your computers will know I'm a "valid?"

Allen Johnson said:

As I understand it, that's all there is to it.

Tony Ledford said:

FreeBird, JayCee, for the first time, I believe, I agree with the two of you on something, even though I do not post anonymously. (I did in June and July, but quit doing so by the end of July.)

People should not have to reveal their identities unless they choose to do so. If they make real, unambiguous threats to someone, that is different, but there are ways to find them (as justjoe discovered) whether they are "anonymous" or not, in such cases.

Anonymity just makes it harder to identify someone *easily.*

However, I will register, and if I start getting any spam I will yell at Allen and John.

:-)

Best regards,
Tony

To clear up some confusion, we will not actually implement the TypeKey authentication until this coming Friday. At that point, you will be asked for your TypeKey user name and password when commenting on the Letters to the Editor.

Also, News & Record has NO access to your personal information other than your email address. TypeKey is an authentication service operation by Six Apart. Six Apart is the company responsible for the blogging software that powers the News & Record blogs. Your email address will only be used to communicate with you in case there are concerns about your comments and our Terms of Service.

AnonForALittleLonger said:

Charles,

I have a question for " Big Brother ". Let's say my IP is Triad.rr.com and I have a Yahoo account which I access thru my road runner. And further I sign up for your TypeKey under my Yahoo account. Can your technology identify my road runner account and thus my personal info ?

Thank You

Allen Johnson said:

I don't know, but I'll find out.

The only information News & Record will have access to is the email address you use to register for the TypeKey service. If this is a Yahoo email address, that is all we'll have through TypeKey.

I do have to point out that your IP address (which is numeric)is already available to N&R editors using the current software. If you are using RoadRunner, this could be used to specifically identify your computer. That can only be accomplished after obtaining a subpoena for that information, however, and I am guessing a subpoena will only be granted if there is a clear violation of some legal statute.

The advantage of using TypeKey is that we will have some way of contacting you if there are concerns as to whether or not you are abiding by the News & Record Terms of Service. It will give us no more personally identifying information than is already available.

I should point out that TypeKey has another benefit. Your TypeKey identification is unique to you. No one else can post a comment pretending to be you. If you choose to use a pseudonym, that's fine, but no one else will be able to use your pseudonym to comment on Letters to the Editor.

Allen Johnson said:

Thanks for the quick responses, Charlie. As you may have surmised, Charlie is our in-house expert on TypeKey without whom I would be lost on technology questions.

Noh Bodi said:

I like the idea. It's so easy to say things when you have no accountability. Besides with a login needed maybe I won't post drunken responses so often :)

mrproduce said:

I will be sending the spam that I started receiving immediately after registration to you Allen. So far I have about 6 letters telling me how I can help some rich person get their money out of some country if I will only send them my banking information. I have also received 4 ads for things I have not asked for. Shall I send them as I receive them or bulk mail them to you.

Mr. Produce,

I suspect the spam you received, especially of the kind you describe, is unrelated to your TypeKey registration. The more likely reason for the spam you received is that your email address has been "harvested" by a web-crawler that looks for email addresses on blogs and in other forums. If you have ever used your email to post in a blog or other forum, your email address is vulnerable to these harvesters.

TypeKey will actually help prevent this kind of harvesting as your email address is somewhat more secure. Six Apart, the software company that has developed the TypeKey authentication service, has a privacy policy that specifically states your email address will not be sold or given to third parties and you will only receive solicitation messages from TypeKey or Six Apart if you specifically opt-in to receive such messages. You can read the Six Apart privacy policy at http://www.sixapart.com/privacy. If you have additional privacy concerns or complaints in regards to the TypeKey service, you can email privacy@sixapart.com.

As I noted earlier, I have been a TypeKey registered user for approximately six months and have received no spam that can be attributed to the service.

marionwormer said:

Charlie Okay. I think I now have typekey. Wheew ! Can you confirm I have registered properly ?

Marion,

Unfortunately, I can't! You can visit https://www.typekey.com/t/typekey
and try to log in. If it lets you log in, you did it right!

Thanks and good luck!

Tony Morton said:

Ok...so let's say we go along with the letter writer's point of view. This means, too, that when the NC coast including the fragile Outer Banks is badly damaged by a hurricane, it must not be rebuilt. The area has a history of storms that destroy things. Look at hurricanes and, of course, the Ash Wednesday storm. South Florida should have been abandoned years ago. Oh....and we must tell the Netherlands that, sorry, if your dykes break, you should abandon all of that land. Lady, GET REAL

Allen Johnson said:

This response was misdirected, I presume?

Last Friday night a group of us got together to support one of our teammates. In 1955 a group of 15 and 16 year old boys played in the 1st Colt League World Series in Evanston, Il. We had two coaches, Dave Nance and Raymond Pennington, one advisor, Charlie Teague and one trainer, Sonny Cashion. I want name the entire team, but one stood out on Friday, Larry Crayton one of our pitchers was inducted into the East Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. We had five players on the 55 team show up, Wilson Carruthers, Steve Wall, Babe Wilhoit, Paul Sams and of course Crayton. Raymond Pennington one of the coaches(who is also a member of the ECU Hall Of Fame)and Tommy Nance, younger brother of coach Dave Nance(who was unable to attend)Larry Crayton did fabulus in his acceptance speech and was the toast of the inductions. The reason I am writing this letter is to let you know that no one from any media organization in Greensboro was in attendence. I can't believe that you could not have sent one reporter to this event, it is a crying shame for one of our own to be honored at a state university and not have one word printed in his hometown paper. Oh by the way Larry pitched ECU to the only National Championship they have ever had and about 200 people heard about it. I would send a reporter to ECU and also to Larry's house for an interview if I had any say about newspaper assignments. LOCAL BOY MAKES GOOD would have made a good headline and a lot of people would have read it, but you missed the boat. We had a great time at our 50th reunion and were proud to be part of Larry's induction process. We will remember that night as a great time together to reminice about old times and replay ballgames and would like to share this with the people of Greensboro, thanks for sending us to Chicago 50years ago and for all the memories.

James Quinn's letter deserves kudos, not negative repercussions. I might go further, though, by stating that Bush & Company are war criminals...being led away in chains is much too dignified for these little men in big positions. The war in Iraq is just the tip of the iceberg of problems besetting us.

Since Reagan's regime, this once great country has accelerated its descent towards a second rate power. The situation we find ourselves in now with environmental desecration, outrageous health care costs, ever increasing poverty and disfranchished citizenry is not the fault of the elected officials. It is the fault of an uncaring and uninformed populace. We are drifting closer and closer towards fascism as the ignorant voting public continues to elect self-aggrandizing individuals to office. The christians are hypocrites who care more for the life of a fetus than tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi's. The Republicans are doing what they have always done best, loot the country for personal gain. The Democrats are cowards, still standing like deer in the beams of headlights, confused, and not knowing what to do next. When I look around and see the blank stares of the young connected to I Pods, game sets and laptops, I shiver in fear, for the future will be bleaker in their hands.
