Register today ... or hold your peace
A gentle reminder, dear readers: Today begins a new policy at the News & Record letters blog.
You must register via TypeKey (the instructions are on the blog) to be able to comment.
Also, effective today: We will selectively close comments on threads that we believe either have gotten out of hand or have run their course.
And comments on all letters will be closed after they have been posted one week.
These policies won't surrender your privacy. They will ensure that you post comments under only one registered name and will allow us to track down and/or ban commenters who violate our house rules (spelled out at the top of the blog). You also won't be able to impersonate another commenter.
By the way, this is only a temporary measure. A longer-term registration policy is due later this fall.
We encourage spirited debate on the blogs. We also want you to keep it clean and civil.
Good day, and good luck.

This is a test...
Allen, it looks like it's working smoothly. The long term arrangement you mention will be interesting to see.

BTW, once you sign in with TypeKey, you may appear as a TypeKey registered user on the other NR blogs. Astro Boy's comments are a case in point. TypeKey is only required in order to respond to Letters to the Editor.

Hey, Charlie, Thanks for the info on how creaps get addresses to send me all the wonderful you have been chosen to help me get a bizillion dollars out of camel hump africa. Now with the new typekey thing in place, which you said actually kept these scumbags from harvesting addresses, how do I get rid of them. It seems that even spamware doesn't help. They even sift through on the Mac which is supposed to have one of the most sophisticated screens in the puter world. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. E-mail is accepted at home. Thanks

Mr. Produce,
If I had the answer on how to get rid of spam, I'd be a billionaire! Unfortunately, I don't have an answer! The only thing I can suggest is that you forward any spam you get to your ISP. Usually abuse@ will work.
Posted on September 26, 2005 12:35 PM
Been there done that Charlie, but thanks anyhow. These things come from dozens of ISP's, each one is different it seems. One would think with all the brains out there in puter space that someone could come up with something to stop these nutzoids. Oh, and Charlie, if you want to be a millionaire, I got one this morning where some nut managed to put away 285 million without anyone knowing about it, (yea sure) and wants to give you 30% if you help him get it out of the Savings and Loan it is stached in. Remember, Charlie, it's the thought that counts.

Mr. P,
Yeah, that last one sounds totally legitimate. I could sure use the money. Maybe you should forward that one along!
I can't believe people fall for this stuff, but obviously people do. Otherwise that particular spam would've died out years ago!

Charlie, tried to link to your e-mail but guess the new system doesn't let me do it. Got a question for you. Are you getting any reports of glitches in the typekey where it does not leave one connected after checking the box, remember me for 2 weeks? I have had to sign in on several occassions after being idle for an hour or more. Sometimes instead of showing the comment section it shows the sign in etc stuff and once you hit sign in, the comment sections appears. What gives? Am I the only one or are others asking.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

One other thing I remembered after I posted. This also happens occassionaly when I switch from one blog to another: example from LTE to Allen's blog or Editors blog. This interuption has happened 3 times this morning.
Posted on September 27, 2005 12:30 PM
mrproduce,
I have had the same thing happen. I wonder if it has more to do with the N&R site. Maybe you have to sign in to its site every day even though you are signed into Typekey's for the 2 weeks. I dunno.
Maybe it has somehting to do with the typekey "token" and your "weblog preferences."
Posted on September 28, 2005 9:06 AM
No, that didn't seem to do it.
Posted on September 28, 2005 11:21 AM
Mr. Produce,
I have seen the issue you describe. I'm looking into possible causes, but I haven't seen anything yet. Hopefully we can figure it out soon. Thanks!
Posted on September 28, 2005 11:37 AM
Thanks Astro and Charlie. It sure is a pain in the butt to have to sign in just to change blogs. So far today it has only happened one time and then all I had to do was hit the sign in link and it automatically signed me in. A very different matter than what was happening yesterday.
Posted on September 28, 2005 11:52 AM
I've had the problem too, mrproduce. I assumed it just timed out after so many minutes.
Posted on September 28, 2005 1:36 PM
This is the response I got from Six Apart regarding the issues with TypeKey.
1) In Tools > Internet Options > Privacy, click on the Sites button and add news-record.com and blog.news-record.com as sites to always accept cookies from
2) If that doesn't resolve the issue, in Tools > Internet Options > Privacy, click on the Advanced button. Put a check next to "Override automatic cookie handling", then set both First-party Cookies and Third-party Cookies to Accept, then put a check next to "Always allow session cookies" and click OK and then OK again.

Still screwing up Charles. Today, every time I switch blogs or am away for a few minutes even though I checked the remember me for 2 weeks box, it's still a hassle. I have the override on cookies on and do not experience this on anyother site except this one which is keyed by Typekey. Sounds like they got a problem or else it's in your system one. I don't know much about this stuff but the spouse does. Son Brian suggested the same as you did and then said it had to be turnkey or your system. He is the family puter whiz and chief engineer at a company who handles the largest satalitte TV network in the world. He knows a bit about puters.

Oh and Charles it does this on both my computers, one a PC and the other a Mac. I thought it might just be inherent to the Mac but same goes on the PC.
Posted on September 29, 2005 5:07 PM
Charles, sorry to dog you, but I have a related question. When I click on the Typekey icon of some people I get the "Page not found" screen. This happens whether or not I'm logged in to Typekey. James D. Rockefeller is one example. Does this mean someone is able to bypass Typekey somehow, similar to putting a made-up email address in for a blog (other than the LTE)?
Thanks.

mrproduce,
I just tried the second action Charles described above, and then rebooted my computer (a PC), and it seems to have worked. I'll ask an obvious question: Have you rebooted?
Posted on September 30, 2005 8:32 AM
Arrgghh! It didn't work after all.
Sheesh!
Posted on September 30, 2005 9:30 AM
Sorry for all the hassle. Thanks for your continued patience. I'm taking this back to TypeKey! It could be a bug in our version of MT. I'll check into that possibility.
Posted on September 30, 2005 10:53 AM
Yes Charles, I rebooted both the Mac and the PC. I got the same problem. Now today I am finding that on several occassions, even though I am signed on when I make my post and enter the numerical code, I get the error screen and says I must sign in.
This is getting to be a real pain. On two occassions I totally lost what I was going to post and had to re-write. I got smart and started copying my post to an e-mail and holding it until I saw if it was going to post.
Sounds like a lot of us folks are having a fit with this Typekey deal. Hope you got a better alternative coming up.
Posted on September 30, 2005 3:31 PM
Charles, see if you can get the folks at typekey or what ever they are to feed this thing some memory pills. This is 5th time I have been shown the error box and required to sign in again.
A period of perhaps an hour went by when I was on idle. SHEEEESH!!!
