The latest chapter in Bennett's 'Book of Virtues'

Bill Bennett, author of "The Book of Virtues," is sounding less and less virtuous by the minute.

When disputing a caller on his radio talk show, who contended that abortions have reduced the crime rate, the former education secretary added:

"But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down."

The White House, in the meantime, responded with a limp statement that the president finds the remarks "inappropriate."

No kiddin'?

Oh,Dear,God. What on earth was he thinking? Never mind that he SAID it, how could he even think like that?

It saddens me that those kinds of thoughts even cross peoples' minds. I guess maybe it is better that he said it. At least we know where he stands. Although I guess that never was in question.

As we find in every circumstance, there are wonderful people and there are horrible people. Usually it's not difficult to decipher which is which and unfortunately we have LOTS of practice doing that.

So, Bennett gets jw's MORON OF THE WEEK award.

Samuel S. Spagnola said:

I agree that Bill Bennett's remark was stupid and he does deserve to be criticized for it. However, you should have at least included his whole quote, Allen, so your readers could put it in context and see the point that Bennett was trying to make as ill conceived as it was. I suggest people read the statement from his website at http://www.bennettmornings.com.

Still my initial reaction is still the same- what the hell was Bennett thinking? It was a poor choice to illustrate the point he was trying to make.

Samuel S. Spagnola said:

One more thing- Bill Bennett does not work for the White House, nor was his statement linked to the White House or White House policy in any way- so what difference does it make that the President's response was "limp"? It has nothing to do with Bush. I didn't hear Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid or John Kerry comment on it at all, so why are the President's comments on Bennett relevant at all?

mrproduce [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Thanks Sam for pointing out that the quote used in this paper was taken out context, or at least the entire statement was not printed. Also thanks for pointing out that Bill Bennett has nothing to do with the White House. You saved me the trouble.

However I do have some questions as to why there has been no outrage over statements made by black leaders in the last few weeks. As I posted over on the Pew, I questions why when a black man accuses the whites of intentionally blowing up the dykes to kill black people ,and there is absolutely no truth to it, a total lie, he gets a pass.
Or perhaps when a black Lt Governor uses the N word and expresses regret but gets a pass.
I question when a black politician can compare a white president to the worst of segregationist, he gets a pass.
Does any one ever wonder why these things are just overlooked or shrugged off or given a pass?

Taken out of context or not, Bennetts comments were way off the wall in any forum. I would not have said it because I would have known that no matter how it was stated people would be on it like white on rice, twisting, turning and outright lying at times just to make points.

Ed Cone said:

"...blowing up the dykes to kill black people."

That's not just racist, it's homophobic!

Sorry for jumping on typo Mr. P, just too fun to pass up.

Of course Bennett has no direct connection to Bush. But Bush, embattled on race after Katrina, felt compelled to comment on the statement by one of the leading self-appointed moralists in the GOP fold. The comment from the White House is of course going to draw comments of its own.

What is the relevance in pointing to dumb and offensive things said by other people in a conversation about the dumb and offensive thing said by Bennett? People all along the political spectrum say dumb and offensive things all the time. That doesn't make Bennett's comments, even in context, not dumb or offensive.

mrproduce said:

The point is Ed. it seems that those folks who say dumb and offensive things, being black, get a pass and no fuss is made ,or have I missed something in the news.
Yea, well, Ed, spelling is not my favorite thing and sometime, depending on which puter I am on spell check is lacking. I am sure there are some around who would love to nail me to a cross on that one too. Guess they will get over it.

No Ed, Bush did not feel compelled, certain political leaders demanded that Bush admonish Bennett. Even if he felt compelled to comment, as President or as an individual he certainly had that right, No? If he had not made any comment you know that the left would have been on him like a duck on a junebug, demanding that he speak out against Bennett.

Ed, I frankly don't care one way or the other what Bennett said, he doesn't speak for me. I just wish that his comments would have been reported in full, and not just the damning part. Just as you took the typo, a lot of folks could and would make a big deal out of even that if I were in a position as Bennett is or has been.
As far as I am concerned, his comments were off the wall as I said here and in the Pew blog. I belieive my last paragraph in my post sums up what I thought of the situation and why I would not have said what he did under any circumstance.

Samuel S. Spagnola said:

Another more fair minded analysis of what Bill Bennett was actually trying to illustrate can be found at http://www.nationalreview.com/mccarthy/mccarthy200509301104.asp
It's too bad that too many of us jumped on the sensational part of what Bennett said without analyzing the moral point he was actually trying to make. It was actually very anti-racist when fully understood, although I still think he chose an analogy that was foolish because of the potential for it to be sensationalized and distorted. It just goes to show that while we all talk about an open dialogue on race, it is still a very difficult thing to accomplish because the subject is so heated.

Ed Cone said:

Mr P, it was a joke, a pleasantry, an attempt at humor and not a harsh comment on your spelling. No offense intended.

mrproduce said:

Ed,
I gave you a pass on the "joke" on my spelling as is indicated in my post as I said it matters not. I simply state to you that there are "those" who would not take my spelling as a joke and would cruscify me over it. But as I said , they can get over it.
You addressed other issues in my post as well and I gave you an answer. You attempted to point out that I had chosen to bring up others errors that you felt held no relevance. My post showed that I felt them relevent and I stated my opinion as to why nothing is said about those "dumb and offensive comments that politicians make." I never claimed nor defended Bennetts comments as anything but off the wall, over the top if you will, "dumb and offensive" in you words. But his comments were jumped on like a dog on a bone, while the others get perhaps a "harump" but then a pass. Do you have a logical reason as to why they get a pass other than the one I stated?
Or is it you know that what I say is true but you can not speak it aloud since it might go against the organization you work for and thereby put your tail in a bind.

Ed Cone said:

I don't work for the N&R, never have. I do contibute a column, and have a good relationship with them, but read my blog sometime if you want to see proof that I criticize the paper at will.

I just don't have anything to add to your points. You find the other comments relevant in this context, I didn't. We disagree.

JayCee said:

So why didn't you use Bennett's entire quote in your opinion article? You're taking a part of it out of context to make a racial mountain out of a molehill.

Tony Ledford said:

Okay, so we're all "taking it out of context" and "jumping on Bennett," etc.

Would all the Bennett-defenders feel the same way if the following statement had been made by, say, Al Sharpton, or Michael Moore?

"But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce corporate crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every white male baby born to Republican parents in this country, and your corporate crime rate would go down."

:-)

Have a nice day,
Tony

Tony Ledford said:

I see I need to re-phrase my fictional quote, a "quote" that I would like the Bennett-defenders to read and honestly answer the question, "What would I think if Al Sharpton or Michael Moore said that?"

"But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce corporate crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every white male baby that would otherwise be born to Republican parents in this country, and your corporate crime rate would go down."

As always, best regards,
Tony

Samuel S. Spagnola said:

If Al Sharpton or Michael Moore, or any liberal for that matter said such a thing, you would never know about it because the press would ignore it.

Jon Caldwell said:

As insensitive and crass as this comment was, regardless of context, it does not change the fact that it is true. Aborting all Jewish children or Asian children would probably do little to alter the crime rate. You could reduce the crime rate to near zero by aborting all children.

It's an outlandish thought process to go down no matter how you slice it. But it indirectly addresses the facts of who make up the criminal population in this country. Would any of you like to venture a guess as to the demographics of North Carolina's prison population?

Jon Caldwell said:

I imagine I will get some heat for the last comment.

Tony Ledford said:

Sam, my friend, I don't know where you live, but it ain't on Earth.

The press would be all over Sharpton or Moore if either of them said something like that.

Not to mention the talking (empty) heads like Limbaugh.

Regards,
Tony

JayCee said:

What world do YOU live in, Tony?
Race-baiters like Sharpton, Michael Moore, Louis Farrakhan, and Jesse Jackson say things like that ALL THE TIME. However, they get a pass on it because, as we all know, only white people can be racists.
Let's look at some real-world definitions here: Violent verbage by a liberal is just a way of spreading the "truth." Any negative comment by a conservative is a vicious, mean-spirited attack.

Freddy Niché said:

What no one seems to want to address is the underlying data stream which Stephen Leavitt writes about in "Freakonomics" which was the prompt for Bennett's remarks. Bennett didn't want to acknowledge the progress made by allowing women the right to safe abortions and the correlative drop in crime rates.

This is NOT a "rah-rah, let's hear it for abortion" cheer. But the data suggest children who are planned for, hoped for and cared for are less likely to act out in illegal ways, maybe especially in violent ways.

Or is it all genetics?

truth [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

People say stupid things all the time. I agree that if he would have said the same thing about white people, the general concensus would have been 'what an idiotic thing to say' and people would have moved on. Because he said it about black people, it is instead a MAJOR issue that must be addressed, readdressed, and later a Truth and Reconciliation commission will study the 'real' truth and examine the evidence and attitudes surrounding the event.

Bill Bennett is a loud mouth, arrogant button-pusher and to expect him NOT to say something stupid at least once a day is naive.

Even if his statement was true in some esoteric sense, the fact is people should be a little more sensitive when it comes to the painful and controversial topics of abortion and race relations.

There is enough guilt, grief, anger, and denial wrapped around both those issues without needing Bill Bennett around to tear off the scabs without any purpose or benefit to result.

I applaud the President for commenting on the stupidity of the remark and making clear that he did not condone or agree with it.

MIchael Moore a race-baiter?

...uh, JayCee...Michael Moore is white.

JayCee said:

Astro-Boy, Moore is a race-baiter.
He's someone who makes remarks intended to stir up racial controversy.
His skin color is not at issue.

Who in 1993 said this: " There is nothing more painful to me at this stage of my life than to be walking down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking robbery----then look around and see somone who is white and be relieved " ? Noneother than the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
