NAACP skips another Alston term
Judging by his comments to Mark Binker into today's News & Record article, Skip Alston has accepted his defeat for another term as state NAACP president with grace.
Whether he has learned anything from the experience remains to be seen.
Alston continues to do so little with so much.
He is clearly the smartest member of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.
He is a savvy businessman and a clever politician.
He moves comfortably from the grassroots to the executive suite.
He can be a compelling public speaker.
But he is so focused on Doing What's Good For Skip that he misses opportunities to be what he really ought to be: one of the county's most effective servant leaders.
Let me type that again: SERVANT leaders.
The St. James homes fiasco is a case in point. How can an elected leader and (now former) state NAACP president possibly manage such a sad example of substandard, crime-ridden housing? And how could he possibly present himself in the next breath as a advocate for, and champion of, the rights of poor and black people?
Smart people benefit and grow from the lessons of their failures. Will Alston wake up or stay blissfully self-absorbed?

Odds on, nothing will change with perhaps he will become more vindictive because of his loss. He may be hiding it well today, but let's see what next week will bring.

Allen,
I really enjoyed meeting you in person at Converge South and having the opportunity to talk to you some there.
A part of me was genuinely surprised to discover that Alston had lost--I've grown accustomed to outcomes not always turning out the way I'd prefer.
I don't think I can say I'm willing to give Alston the benefit of the doubt, but I'm definitely willing to extend open-minded hope that he will now choose to change some of his ways.
After I first read the results from the election, I wrote a post titled "Will Skip Alston Learn From His Defeat?"
The post probably rambles on too long, but I made some time to turn it into a letter to the editor. (Still wish the limit was 250 words--I'd gotten very used to that standard--but I've gradually adjusted to the 200-word limit.)
My guess is that you and I both would love nothing more than to be able to sing Alston's praises.
But for that ever to happen, he's going to have to start earning it.

If you ever hear Skip tell his story of what happened when he dared to sit on a "whites-only" stool when he was a little boy, your feelings about him may never be the same.
People are so much more complicated than we like to admit. And we all do better with encouragement than condemnation.

Chosen Fast, if I was listening to Skippy spin some yarn about racial persecution, I assure you I'd have my hand firmly protecting my wallet.
And does some story about something that may or may not have happened justify Alston stuffing his pockets with every taxpayer $$$ he can get his hands on?
I doubt that anything I'd hear from Skippy these days would change the way I think. I've seen him operate for years...I form my opinion on what he's done, not what he's said. Talk is cheap.

Skip, like many members of the Board of Commissioners from both parties, has become extremely vindictive. He is a very bright person, but unfortunately he and other members of the Board of Commissioners have treated the job like a contest to see who can score the most points, while the rest of us always end up losing. Hopefully next year we can clean house a little bit and rid ourselves of the people on both sides that have personal axes to grind. Maybe Skip will see the error of his way, but don't bet on it.

CF, of course everyone has a story. But it's a shame that many use those stories as excuses or justification for the things they do. Some even invent stories to use that way, or use real stories to excuse something that has no connection to the things they do.
I prefer to judge people on what they do, not what they say they're going to do, or what they promise, etc.
