Mayor pro tem: Johnson again?

David Hoggard correctly notes that Sandra Anderson, as the highest at-large vote-getter in the Greensboro City Council race, doesn't necessarily have to be made mayor pro tem, although that has been the general practice.

Anderson might opt for statesmanship in this case and yield to Johnson's experience. Johnson is better suited for the position. Anderson would do well to concentrate on learning the job of city council member first.

She also owes a debt of gratitude to Johnson, whose coattails probably helped Anderson in heavily African American precincts.

Johnson and Anderson almost ran as a ticket and were the only two endorsed by the Simkins PAC even though three seats were open.

So, if Anderson had run for Mayor instead of council and had defeated the incumbent, would you say she would do well to let the incumbent continue to be Mayor while she concentrated on learning the Mayor's job?

Give me a break, Allen.

You sound like my big brother who used to change the rules of the game every time I won.

Anderson captured the most at large votes. No question, she IS the Mayor Pro Tem.

Allen Johnson said:

She sure is, if she wants to be.

Oh, interesting fact. Wish I'D thought of that!

The Council decides who the mayor pro tem is. Our
tradition is to give it to the one receiving the most votes. If Sandra doesn't want it, the position doesn't automatically go to Yvonne.

Allen Johnson said:

I know, Tom, but if Sandra said no, Yvonne, by tradition, would be the next-highest vote-getter, no?

Mad Dog said:

I'll have to agree with you Allen. If Sandra doesn't want it, it should go to Yvonne. Let's be consistent.

Allen Johnson said:

Headline from this week's Carolina Peacemaker: "New mayor pro tem elected."

Tom Phillips said:

Allen,Our tradition begins and ends with the highest vote getter.

Allen Johnson said:

So, if it isn't Sandra Anderson, Tom, who would you support?

Tom Phillips said:

It's going to be Sandra. There is no reason she wouldn't accept it. Many people think it's like being the Vice President. It's not. If Keith could not continue to serve for whatever reason, the council determines who the new mayor is and that person doesn't even have to be serving on the council.

Allen Johnson said:

But what if it hadn't been, Tom? What if Sandra had nominated Yvonne? Would you have supported that?

Allen Johnson said:

Who would you have supported instead ... and why?
