A requiem for candid cameras

I don't know about you, but I've noticed that more motorists are wild and crazy guys at Greensboro intersections now that the city has pulled the plugs on its red-light cameras.

Say what you will about Big Brother. The cameras made a difference.

All we had to do as drivers was obey the law.

Yes indeed, they DO make a difference, Alan. Just not in the way you were thinking.

I've lived in a lot of communities that have done some stupid things, but the decommissioning of the red-light cameras in G'boro topped them all.

They sure got my young daughter's attention, twice in the wallet, and made her more respectful of intersections as well as a safer driver.

This was stupid, stupid, stupid, and has made the Greensboro community less safe.

Bubba, are you the Bubba who Luvs Jesus?

I think we simply need to pair the bad drivers up with good drivers. Then they will all become better drivers. Right?

Jon said:

Super....GCS,

Great idea.

We take my brilliant HS child and pair him with a less than brilliant HS kid. My kid gets dummied down, while the less than brilliant kid becomes smarter. I like this "new" radical approach to education. In the end all kids become academically equal.

We must tell Terry about this "new" way of making education more equitable for our children.

No, Jon, I don't recall ever professing my love for Jesus in this, or any other blog. Does that help you decide how to reply to my posts from this point on?

You didn't read the links I posted about the red light cameras, did you?

You also didn't share details on why you feel de-commissioning the devices topped all the stupid things in all the communities you've lived in. Would you care to elaborate?

Ahhh yes Jon,

If we dummy everything down, the achievement gap is lessened and he uses that stat on his next resume. He's found the perfect fit this time. He is much, much smarter than those who employ him. It's a luxury he hasn't had in his past job experiences.

Gee whiz you are touchy. Got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?

No I didn't go to the links you referenced. I would have preferred you to summarize for us the premise of the articles. Read ,comprehend, and then feedback the results.

There's a guy who goes by the name of Bubba Luvs Jesus who posts especially on the Chalkboard, and I was wondering if it was you. That's all.

Jon said:

Super...GCS,

Absolutely.

By implementing this plan, Terry narrows the achievement gap for GCS students, gets or takes credit for the success of redistributing the brain power of the Guilford County student, gains awards from the NEA & Dept of Ed., and as a consequence is heavily recruited by other school districts as a result of this success.

How did we get off the subject of Red Lights. This topic would be better discussed at the Chalkboard, with Bubba.

I like to run red lights--within reason, of course--and so I was delighted they got rid of them. Haven't had a ticket since 1988, either, and I've never been in an accident. With the superslow greenlight times of most driver, you have at least two seconds to slip through. When you had to stop, that time was totally wasted. I feel more efficient now.

Put in round-a-bouts and do away with all redlights and red light camera's. That way we will all be running in circles as it seems the education office in your fine city is still doing. Or at least perhaps they are trying to run the parents in circles to confuse them. It works on round-a bouts. Folks stopping in the middle of the road for no reason. Lots of accidents, lots of tempers flaring at those who just won't go. Sounds again like the school deal.
Sure you can put your smart driver kid with a dumb driver kid and make em all smart drivers. Just like we use to put mules in with our "cutting horses" so we would have to buy new ones. Why buy, when mules are suppose to do just fine after being in the pasture for a year or so with the cutters.

My, my! Ascribing an attitude upon me by the simple words I used? Where did you develop such marvelous ESP skills?

The links discuss a number of reports from several different sources that show the presence Red Light Cameras in communities across the country INCREASE the incidents of rear end collisions at intersections where they were used.

There are also several other reports avaiable that show thst rates of rear and side impact collisions at intersections are significantly reduced by simply increasing the duration of yellow lights.

When you're done assessing those points, perhaps we can discuss the revenue-driving aspect of installing Red lLight Cameras. We can then follow it up with a legal discussion of the finer points involved in this issue.
