Alert! Alert! Sustained civil discourse about race and politics ... on a blog
If you missed this recent thread on Ed Cone's blog, check it out. It is lively and thoughtful with devoid of the childish name-calling that typically accompany such discussions.

I read that...it was interesting to see liberals (sorry, Ed) who are in denial arguing over labels they like to misuse against conservatives.

I too was amused by the entire dog-chasing it’s tail dialog between Ed and Chewie, and then Roch and Chewie. They are all quite literate and informed people. Perhaps too much so, or not enough, which ever. Roch once accused me of “showing my racism” when I expressed outrage at the Muslim practice of mutilating their daughters by removing their clitorises. Ed told me to “look closer and think harder” about Greensboro politics when I ask why obvious criminals and thieves like Melvin “Skip” Alston were permitted to use county funds given to his pet projects with no accountability, and dared to ask if it was perhaps the white guilt he plays on by calling all who oppose or question him racist. And due to their fear of being accused of racism by Mr. Alston they shy away from accusing him and looking into his ’shady’ activities. (I was referring to an article in The Rhino Times but could very well have been quoting Lorraine Ahearn). My answer to Roch was something like, I am vehemently against and will always denounce “brutality, cruelty, stupidity and willful ignorance” and if that makes me a racist in his view I guess that is his problem.
Mr. Johnson, you obviously felt that this dialog was to be admired. Why and how? Did it answer any questions? Did it solve any problems? Did it even point out any problems that need to be solved? Or were you simply impressed by the over blown rhetoric?

Actually, I was impressed by its thoughtful tone and civility. But, of course, that's one man's opinion.

Allen,
Now that diversity has been assured in High Point schools by the school board, when are we going to begin in Greensboro? Dudley really is in need of being desegregated. How about moving some kids around between Dudley, Page, and Grimsley? As Marti Sykes once said, "Those kids need diversity".

Brenda, I guess you were still on your much-mentioned trip around the country when I put my name on the line by writing a newspaper column opposing bond funding for the Civil Rights museum as long as Skip was in charge. And maybe you missed my blog post last year, "Racists, Racists, everywhere," about his misuse of that allegation. I know you think Greensboro began when you arrived, but give me a break.
Sam, no need to apologize for using the L-word, my point is that it's not a bad name.

Mr. Cone, You have seen fit to denigrate at me since I began blogging in September. I don't like you, I am not impressed with your supercilious attitude and I just wish you would go away. You are one of the reasons I left Greensboro101. The "dialog?" you three had was just as I described it : pure pointless rhetoric. A twosome of narcissistic pseudo intellectuals unable to even retain the thread of their own rebuttal. Roch did try to preserve some sort of constancy to the discourse but with little success. The discussion on race prompted by David Hoggard’s post was far superior because with the exception of only a few participants those commenting were real and sincere individuals wishing to communicate.
As for my travels I am sorry that I have burdened you with my “much-mentioned” adventures. You know, I do not hide behind anonymity, my name is always prominently displayed on any of my comments or entries, so as I have made it a point to ignore yours you a welcome to afford me the same courtesy. I read your posting and comments today to better understand what Mr. Johnson found superior to the those we have been having about racism on his blog. I shall never be so tempted again.
Now as to your writings. It is true that I only began reading blogs in September, but before I stopped logging onto your site I was beginning to believe that you had no original thoughts at all since you were forever referring readers to another’s site and opinions. Perhaps you were just taking a few months off and were much more inventive before I arrive on the scene and since I have chosen to go elsewhere. Ado Sir. Sincerely, Brenda Bowers

Brenda,
You made a specific and untrue claim: that I shy away from challenging Skip Alston due to a "fear of being accused of racism."
With that claim refuted, a possible response from you might be, "Oops, sorry, I did not have all the facts and misspoke when I accused you of cowardice."
I'm sorry you have bad feelings toward me. I recall interacting with you once, when you stated incorrectly that public funds built the baseball stadium. I welcome your contribution to G'boro blogging, and I accept that we all shoot from the hip sometimes and voice our opinions freely.
But it's not joke to be called a racist, and thus it's no joke to stand up to politicians who sling that word around. So when you publish a comment saying I'm afraid to stand up to someone I've stood up to quite vocally, well, I take it seriously.

Stormy, I fully agree on the school diversity issue. Not sure where the school board is; it seems to shift its priorities day to day.

Mr. Cone, I never called you a racist. If you can point me to the comment you are referring to I will most certainly publicly apologize even though it could only be a statement that you misunderstood. At the times you made the snide slurs to my intellect I was not even on your site, but another’s. In the comment you are refering to here I neither mentioned nor implied, any one individual. I was speaking generally about white officialdom allowing this disgrace to go on in the county when I felt sure a white man would have been at the very least investigated. Having been called a racist myself since beginning to blog, and after a lifetime of working for civil rights of ALL people, I do indeed know how you would not want to be so label. (Oh, and forgive me Sir since my work for civil rights can also be referred to as "much mentioned".) To resume, I have never applied that label to anyone but the very obvious Skip Alston, Goldie Wells and Mr. Johnson; and that was done not in anger, but in deep sorrow. As for you Mr. Cone I repeat: I have NEVER referred to you as a racist. Frankly Sir after our few encounters I had no wish to consider you personally at all, and took pains to avoid any such contact.
You on the other hand went out of your way to others sites to attack me. Once when Roch featured a post where I paraphrased an article in The Rhino. You made it quite clear that my entry was so poorly written it had no place as a featured article. I have always been a lecturer and not a writer so I am having to learn a new method of communication. I apologize that my blundering efforts offend your more practiced skills and sensibilities. As for my comment on Jim Melvin, to a new comer it certainly appeared that the stadium had been built for him given his prominent display at the opening. It was however a snide remark that I regret making as I truly do try to be kind in my assessment of others and the gentleman had never in any way harmed me.
And Mr. Cone please avoid insincere patronizing statements such as “I welcome your contribution to G’boro blogging”. This has never been the case, and never will be. Just avoid me in the future Sir, and I will consider that a kindness.

Brenda,
I did not say, anywhere or at any time, that you called me a racist.
Posted on February 23, 2006 11:11 AM
Forget it Brenda. When Ed has no defence he just repeats the same thing over and over again. You will never get anything more from him. His truth is the only truth and nothing shall sway his thinking.

Great insight, Mr. Not Brave Enough To Sign His Own Name.
Now, show me where I said Brenda called me a racist.
Tick, tick, tick.
Didn't happen.
