The 411 on UNC

The News & Record editorial board will meet soon with new University of North Carolina President Erskine Bowles.

Bowles, a Greensboro native, has a lot on his place (make that plate) already, including the tuition increase debate, professors' salaries, chancellor pay and the proper role partnerships with private industry ought to play with UNC campuses.

Anything you'd like for us to ask him?

911? A Freudian slip?

Allen Johnson said:

Certainly it's a slip of some sort, Jason. I'd best change that in a hurry. Thanks for the heads-up.

First off, thanks for using UNC to refer to the system, not the single university in Chapel Hill.

So much focus is given to raising the national status of some of the larger schools in the system, but I would like to know about specific plans to raise the quality and awareness levels of the smaller schools in the system.

a lot on his place? You in a hurry today Allen? Isn't that suppose to be "plate". Going to play golf? It sure is a beautiful day for a round or two.
I have been watching the golfers from my window all day long. Got too much work to be done before spring to go play but I enjoy watching their hard work.

Mr. Produce:
You're a tough audience today. Mad that you're not out here with me on the golf course?

1. Are there plans to increase the % of out-of-staters at UNC-CH? If so, why?

2. Are there any plans he knows of to use the NC anticipated lottery money for state-school scholarships like the Hope Scholarships in Georgia? If not, is he leading that charge?

3. At the other 15 schools in the system, what's being done to recruit and retain professors with nationally recognized scholarship? (in other words, "what Patrick said.") (Too many profs leave especially local universities like UNCG when they become "famous" for more money (big factor) and for more glamour or prestiege.)

Yes, I'd ask him why only Democratic political hacks get top jobs at UNC.

mrproduce said:

No Allen, as I said I have too many more important things to do around my house today than go play golf, like finish the plans for the remodel of my guest suite downstairs for those who visit to go play golf. I then take a break just to be tough on you Allen. You need it sometime. You have been skating too long. ahhahahha. I don't have far to go to play Allen. Just down my drive and across the road to the cart shed and club house and away I can go. I can always find time to play golf since I no longer have to work. Are you mad Allen that you can't play anytime you wish?

Marion Wormer said:

UNC-CH seems to have become a haven for failed Democrat pols. Irksome Bowles, Hodding Carter Jr. and of course the Breck Girl John Edwards.

Dudley Bokoski said:

It's been touched on by other posters but here is a slightly different way to put it. If Bowles had won the election and Burr had been appointed to run the UNC system would Bowles have been comfortable with that choice?

Allen Johnson said:

Maybe it's worth remembering that Republicans led the initiative for Bowles' appointment?

Dudley Bokoski said:

That's interesting. Why would they do that?
