Please don't take the pregnant pauses for lack of interest

C'mon, Allen. Where are you? Comment thread getting too hot to handle?

I get this a lot.

It usually occurs when someone challenges me in a thread ... and I'm nowhere to be found.

It's not for lack of interest. Honest.

I don't mean to leave you hanging.

But (how to put this delicately?) I have a life. And a job. And part of both involves blogging, something I value and enjoy and learn from nearly every day.

But, frankly, I have other obligations. Part of the beauty of blogs is that they're open for business 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Still, none of us can be there all the time. At least I can't. At home I need to shave and walk the dog and pull weeds. At work I still interact with readers in other, more old-fashioned ways such as phone calls, e-mails, letters and even in-person meetings.

Pssst. I also have to do research and interview sources and write stuff for the newspaper.

Which is to say that it sometimes may take a while for me to get back to you on some of your points and counterpoints. But please bear with me. As Gov. Schwarzenegger might say, I'll be back.

Mr. Johnson, It is a shame that you feel you have to explain why you aren’t sitting at your computer eagerly waiting for the next blogger to come on line. Dear Lord, you have a life and a job and any fool should know this. I am retired so I have time to sit here on the Net and blog, in fact it keeps me in touch and keeps my mind engaged because when I make a mistake someone is sure to point it out. Yesterday was a good example, I made the mistake of assuming that Terry Grier was an elected official and within 5 minutes I was corrected. Now the fact that this was an easily understood mistake in that I haven’t been in Greensboro long and that in most of the places I have lived the Superintendent of Schools was an elective office, but I really should have checked my facts just on the off chance that Guilford County would be in the minority in this regard.

I have wondered much about who these other bloggers are, and if they are all old retired Fuss Pots like me, or if they have no other life at all. One difficult thing about blogging is that you interact with people but only get to know them on a one dimensional plane without the eye contact, body language and facial expressions to help you judge their personal traits. You, and they, have only the written word which can so easily be misunderstood. Well I am still having a grand time with the medium.

By the way, I don’t imagine you read The Rhino but William Hammer said that you were “a class act” at the Cartoon forum. I have had this impression of you many times thru this blog, and probably that is the reason I am so hurt and dismayed and angered when you allow your racism to show. And please don’t deny that you have a racist attitude, that I grant you try hard to repress. Due I am sure to a bad experience with a White or Whites in general. I am too a racist in that I am totally opposed to and actually detest at time people of the Muslim faith. And the atrocities that that faith teaches. This attitude comes from a very early and devastating experience. My first roommate in college was a lovely Muslim girl from Lebanon. I had never met a kinder sweeter person. Before she was permitted to come to the United States to study (she wished to become a medical doctor) she had to undergo the sexual mutilation so “she would not be tempted to disgrace her family”. After our sophomore year she flew home for a visit and never returned. I kept writing her home and finally her mother wrote and begged me not to write again because Najah had been the victim of an Honor Killing by her brother which was condoned by her faith, her father and the law. Her purported crime? That she had become too American because her English had improved! Najah’s mother feared for her other two daughter’s lives if I kept writing. For 45 years I have never gotten over this and have studied the actions of Muslim’s and their faith and am convinced that there is no good in either. This is my pain and the cause of my prejudice. I truly hope that you are able to overcome yours towards White people because you are one whom I would like to walk with, or help you to walk above and ahead of if you want and my caring can help. This has rambled, but I am going to send it anyhow, Sincerely.
