Thinking Out Loud

At the movies

For what one man's opinion is worth:

1. "Superman Returns" is overlong and overdone. It has its moments, but it borrows liberally from the Spiderman movies and director Bryan Singer lays on the Jesus imagery way too heavy.

2. "The Devil Wears Prada" was an unexpected delight with a terrific performance by Meryl Streep as a tyrannical high-fashion magazine editor.

Has anyone seen "An Inconvenient Truth" yet?

Go to Raleigh and see it in IMAX and you will think it's a dazzling flick that could use 20 more minutes. And the popcorn is good.

Saw it Wednesday. I'll leave the science to the scientists and just say that for a documentary about a guy doing a PowerPoint presentation, it, and Gore, were surprisingly entertaining.

The most interesting thing about "Inconvenient Truth" is that the studio recently removed AlGore's name from the posters and the credits.
It brought in something like $380,000 it's first week when most new releases bring in millions.

I saw it, and thought it was very good. It moved at a nice pace, held my interest, and presented a lot of good information.

Most new releases aren't based around slideshows addressing scientific topics. I'd be surprised if anyone expected it to do as well as Superman Returns, for instance.

"An Inconvenient Truth" is also playing on what is, comparatively, a pathetically small number of screens nationwide - and especially in the Triad.

As for "Superman Returns" - haven't seen it yet, and maybe that's part of the problem. I'm a huge comic nerd and I just haven't been moved to go yet. It would have to have a couple of Pirates-level weekends in a row to make up, even worldwide and in DVD sames, its $250 million plus budget, plus promotional costs. I think they sort of dug themselves into a hole on this one. Which sort of surprises me, given how much trouble it was to get this project off the ground. Why double down on it suddenly?
