According to Jim
Just got off the phone with Jim Melvin.
He was apprising me that, for once, he is writing a letter to the editor about international affairs. It's on the way.
He was as opinionated as ever. But he also was pretty funny. Jim has an underrated sense of humor and a singular wit -- although he'll blissfully stray into the Land of Political Incorrectness in a split second.
Anyway, I got to thinking, once he hung up, that for all the controversy he often attracts, Jim Melvin has been very, very good to Greensboro. I'm not sure where we'd be without him.
And I'm not sure who will step forward to replace him.

When Mayor Jim Melvin ruled in Greensboro, you always knew where the buck stopped and the accountability issue was never in doubt.
My impression of our current situation is that the Mayor is primarily a ribbon cutter and moderator of a discussion group.

Jon,
I'm curious about your statement that, under Mayor Jim Melvin, "the accountability issue was never in doubt." What do you mean by that? Are you comparing accountability issues in the 1970s to accountability issues now? When you say accountability issues, might you be referring to accountability in the police department? Personally, I think we've got accountability issues today similar to those we had in the 1970s in the police department. The faces and personalities might change - I agree there is a big difference between the styles of Jim Melvin and Keith Holliday - but the system doesn't seem to change too much. But I didn't live in Greensboro in the 1970s, so I'd like to hear your perspective.
